This is a very old post!
If you rent a car from a reputable company, the car will have an electronic device that registers the licence plate every time you pass a toll booth. So easy!
The device is pre-loaded with a certain amount. If you need more, you just have to call the rental agency and they will upload it for you.

when we were in Portugal this summer we rented from AutoEurope and the car came with a transponder. It would make a little beep every time we went through a toll spot - it was easy as pie.
