How to pay for B&B

When we are in the highlands and on Skye will we be able to pay with credit cards? It seems unlikely to me that small little farm and privately owned B&B's would have credit card abilities - but just wanted to check. Have decided from perusing other posts that using the ATM'S to get cash withdrawls using a debit card is the best option. Any other good suggestions? Thanks -

All I can say is, check with the B&B proprietor; some of them may be able to take CCs, some not, you won't know unless you ask. Cash is safe, though, everyone takes it.

Some do some don't - each B&B's web site (or listing in an accomodations book) should clearly say if they accept cc's or not. But most B&Bs are very inexpensive so you should have enough cash on hand in any case.

Cash from ATM's works fine. You might need to ask your bank to raise your daily limit, temporarily.

Actually about half of all B&Bs I've stayed at in the UK do take cards. Many that take cards will charge 2% to 5% extra to cover their costs.

In a small town in Ireland - not on the tourist track - my DH, father and I pulled a one-nighter at a tiny B&B. We had two rooms and assumed we'd be able to find an ATM.

And we did find the only one in town.

Which was out of cash.

So we paid quite a bit of our bill - like half of it - with coins dragged forth from our pockets, my purse, the bottom of our suitcases, the back seat of the rental car, etc. Thankfully, our hosts were amused, not offended.

We instituted a new travel rule: Have enough cash today to pay tomorrow night's bill.

Have a great time!

Many places that call themselves B&Bs in Italy (and have prices to match) take credit cards,

However, the "always have enough to pay the next night's bill" is a good one.

Once we stayed in a small town that lost its electric power in the morning. Our hotel keeper couldn't use her credit card machine. Of course it wouldn't have been our fault if we didn't have the cash, but it was nice all around that we did.

I also carry a two blank personal checks with me.

I rented a gite in rural France from an English woman who actually had a PayPal account!

I stayed in a B&B in Skye (near Broadford) that had CC capability. It's called Tir Alainn (Beautiful Country) and was a great, clean, cheerful place. www.visitskye.com

The best thing to do is phone ahead in advance and ask the landlady.
