How to make B&B reservations in UK

In 1997 when DH went to England, we just used the TIC Bed Ahead services, but this time, I would like to choose the B&Bs we will stay at. However, they don't accept credit cards and they all want deposits ahead of time. Western Union wants $25 per money transfers. YIKES!!!

Is it possible to book before we leave the US (June 9)?

It is possible to reserve, but you may have to pay a deposit (1 night is normal). I've always paid this via credit card, but if the B&B you select doesnt accept cc's then you will need to make other arrangements to get the deposit to them. Or choose B&B's that accept cc's or dont ask for deposits.

I haven't stayed at that many B&Bs, but the ones I've stayed at either:

1) take my word for it and didn't ask for any deposit to reserve; or
2) accept credit card

Perhaps you can call the B&B and see if you can work something out with them? I would NOT send over money via western union - you lose out a lot in terms of poor exchange rate and fees.

Every B&B I've ever contacted in UK has accepted a credit card number to hold a reservation.

Western Union, and similar money-transfer services, are indeed a rip-off... to be used only as a last resort. (I used it for reserving lodging in Croatia one time, and I was outraged by the cost.)

One time we sent a check in US dollars. We paid cash when we left, and they gave us back the check. In my memory it is very rare to be asked for a deposit, at least not from Americans. Maybe you just chanced on one of the few. If you especially want to stay there, then offer a check.

After many years of staying at B&B's, many who deal in cash only, I have never made a deposit. Either by e-mail and sometimes by phone I explain that I will be there and can they just trust me. I have never been turned down. And if they did, I would just look for another.
