You'd be nuts to having workmen you don't know around -- will they be given keys to walk in whenever they want, or are you expected to hang around and let them in?

Anyway, good luck with booking.com, and you should be calling places. Other peope cancel last minute and hotels have rooms they need to fill. Good luck.

Hi I'm in Europe now. No I don't plan to stay in that apt. Will get a hotel though it's been a whirlwind and haven't picked one out yet. I love being back here so happy but kinda scared roaming the streets alone. But I'm always freaking scared whats up with that, am i the only one?? How about those cheap hotel recs guys? Thank you!

Go to Booking.com and input your dates. Given that you're already there and it's a busy time in Paris, that may be the best way to find something available. I already gave you a recommendation for the Cosmos Hotel in the 11th.

I stayed in a couple of hotels in the 9th (non-sleazy areas) that were relatively economical, but it depends if you are lucky enough to get the same deal (less likely last-minute in October). These were Mercure Monty (room was small, but location was great), and another one that is unavailable as it is undergoing renovation. I used AccorHotels.com for Mercure Monty.

I'd strongly suggest looking in that general area in the 9th for hotels, if indeed you are wanting to look at a lower budget. I doubt there is anything approaching luxury, though.
Also, take a look at LMTravelClub.com (you have to google for a promotional code to get a free membership). This often has the best deals that I have seen for hotels. Other good consolidator sites for zeroing in on hotels are Kayak.com, Trivago.com, and HotelsCombined.com .

It's hard to give recommendations as the best hotels may be booked up, and rates can easily vary by a factor of 2 depending on the time of year.

I'm really glad you aren't going to the apartment that is under renovation. I'm sorry I can't help with a budget hotel in Paris, but hopefully others can.

It's on place Thoudouze just a bit north of the St Georges metro stop, a great location. They do have a std room available for 10/13 for 157 euro, nonrefundable (167 regular rate). You could book it at least a few days. I only checked for a week and a week was free, at least.

They do have rooms with a terrace and view of Sacre Coeur but it doesn't seem free, and is the deluxe category anyway. You aren't going to get that for 150 euro.

I believe the works story, I'm not sure why one wouldn't believe it. That's what you risk when you book private apts, it's not the first time I've heard of works going on that one wasn't warned about. The owner obviously just risks getting a cancelation, they aren't coming out ahead in any way.

If you really liked the apt, I wouldn't care that much as I don't have any valuable belongings, frankly. I only travel with my clothes which are not expensive, nothing expensive at all. I have no expensive jewelry and no expensive electronic gadgets (although people often have those on them, anyway). But since the LL would lose everything, if you didn't care that much and really liked it, I'd ask for a bigger discount than 10 pct, that's for sure. At least 25-33%.

You CAN GET a cheap room at an IBIS in almost any part of Paris. Even for a night or two.

Agree with Christina--bigger discount. What do you have that they would want!!

I've stayed at the Saint Pierre twice. I love the location, the front staff is friendly and the rooms are small but adequate. I think they've freshened them up since my last stay. But the hotel books up well in advance.

I would sure like to see how all you people who THINK you would accept a big discount and stay in an apartment where workmen have the right to enter at any time, stay as long as they like, use smelly chemicals and noisy tools and begin work at 8AM or even earlier and into the night if they are working sur le black would deal with trying to get dressed or take a shower or make coffee especially when the water and electricity are turned off. Either you're masochists or exhibitionists or just plain unrealistic or worse. You'd be better off sleeping in a tent under a bridge.

There are more than 6000 hotels in Paris. Look on KAYAK to check all available rooms and prices. Email or call. Done and dusted.

suze - obviously you have never been in this situation in Paris. It's not about stealing your possessions but about the inconvenience and lack of privacy. Of course if all you care about is a cheap place to store your non-valuable possessions and if you don't plan on actually occupying the apartment for most of the time you have rented it that is your choice. Most people would not spend money to do same. Get the facts straight. Sheesh indeed.

Incredible technically-free (though they have a suggested 5€ donation, which you really ought to pay) museum is the Carnavalet, in the Marais, dedicated to History and culture of Paris.

We are staying there again next May.. rooms are tiny. but so is price for location.. and yes.. they do book up fast.
