How scary are the roads in Croatia?

I have read that driving on the coast roads can be pretty scary with no guard rails or shoulders and steep cliffs. We are heading that way so I would love to have more detailed info from those that have been there and driven lots.

We are in a small, older motorhome so even more of a challenge than a tiny Euro car for these type roads altho we have gotten lots of practice with some humdingers like the ones up to Santorini or Delphi.

We will be starting in Dubrovnic and working our way north to Lake Bled etc with a short trip to Montenegro. Sadly we will be there in high season as we are just leaving Greece now and after two long over night ferries, we will be there.

I would love any specific feedback on what roads to avoid or ways to get around the worse roads or where it is particularly dangerous for a larger vehicle like ours. Where is it better to go by ferry to avoid road?

Thanks so much!!

If you can drive in Greece, you'll be fine in Croatia! We found a lot of similarities, but on the whole Greece was slightly worse.
The Croatian motorways are marvellous.
Remember to keep your lights on at all times when driving!

Rhe roads are fine. The only road you shouls avoid is crossing Hvar! This is one of the scariest roads I drove. It was scary with a small sedan, I wouldn't dare drive it in a motor home.

What a wuss eri.... Hvar is no diferent than any New Zealand or Australian secondary road. The roads and traffic generally in Croatia are some of the best in Europe taking into account they are not superhighways. The only part we did not go was Zagreb and the inland Mts. The roads in Montenegro are a little less forgiving but a normal pace and awareness is the best rule.

Thanks again. I have actually heard repeatedly that the Hvar roads are some of the scariest on the planet.

We were regulars on hwy1 in Big Sur at home which is a scary road to some, so have experience, but some of the roads in Europe ( especially in an RV!!) have been much scarier than anything at home.

It is just nice to know ahead of time what to be careful on as once you are on them, there is no turning back usually and we travel with a young child.

So far it has been no problem, but we have only begun our stay in Croatia.

Sorry, King, but the road all across Hvar is VERY different from NZ. I drove all over NZ, nothing to compare. The only good part of the Hvar road is from Starigard to the town Hvar. The rest is one of the scariest roads I have been on. And if you compare it favorably to roads in Nz (or even Montenegro) - I can only gather that you have not done all the 80 km long road.
WTnow, I lived 4 years in the California. Believe me, Big Sur is a super highway compared to Hvar. Life is too precious! Don't do it! You can take the ferry from Split to Starigard and this way avoid the bad road.

Eri.... I confess I stopped 15kms short of Sucuraj after 80kms as I got bored and went back to Poljica to get onto the Vino. Maybe my tolerances are different but I would classify the Skippers Canyon in the South Island of NZ on a par with the Kasam Pass in the Papua New Guinea Highlands as a little sphinctal moving.

I am trying to suggest that the pass after Jelsa is only 2000m and is a bit like a stroll in the park but again not enough to be put off visiting places on the way..... my wife verges on the manic vertiginously and she only gripped my waist a little tighter. Its a shame to be put off going to Vrboska or Jelsa when there is not much need to go further..... you do not get out of 3rd gear to get there.

We are leaving in 10 days and today in the U.S.A. Today newspaper it lists Croatia as one of the worst 23 countries in the road to drive in. We have driven the Amalfli coast numerous times, downtown Rome and Rio de Janeiro, but quite frankly am getting a little worried. Any reason I should be more concerned in Croatia than these other destinations?

Where does the data come from to judge a whole Country...... Look at previous posts just about Hvar. Amalfi and Rome or if you like the whole of Italy is more scary than croatia.
I found croatia in the top 25 if you want a country by country analysis.
