Our family did not care for the food and I would say we all would lose weight if in Paris an extended time. Plus all the walking..

May I ask a question someone said they took hteir pedometer and I intend to, and said they walked miles. How many steps for a mile? Does anyone know?

Thanks
Stacey

Getting a pedometer is a good idea, but might scare you when you see you've walked seven miles in half a day. I'd have to go back to the room and lie down for a while (kidding).

I bought a ped at Target a couple of years ago and used it religiously until it died. The one that I had gave directions to program it to your stride. I think for me about 2,000 steps equaled a mile but could be wrong. Do a search on google for pedometers and you might find an answer.

You'll have a great time. I understand about the bakery, that's my weakness too, but I didn't gain. Try Poulain if you're in the 7th, Gerard Mulot in the 6th and Maison Kaiser on Rue Monge. Yum. If you walk from one to the others, you'll work off the calories.

Even if I didn't adore French food, I could live nicely on the salads, tartines, crepes, roasted chicken with pommes puree...

BTW - what is "the French food" that these people didn't like? What can't you get in Paris?

HI tusc,

My sympathies.
the only solution is for you to move to France or Italy.

Hi Mom,

>I plan to eat a lot of cheeses and fruit during the day.<

Be careful with the cheeses. France has at least 450 kinds of cheese. You can't sample all of them in a week. You'll get sick.

>what is "the French food" that these people didn't like? <

All that stuff with strange names and sauces on it - poulet, boeuf, poisson, saucisse, oeufs, jambon, croissant, baguette, ....

What is the point of walking around attached to a pedometer?

What is the point of walking around attached to a pedometer?

It was in direct response to the poster's anticipated reluctance to "imbibe" in Paris' culinary offerings. A person who sees he/she has walked 10+ miles should be able to overcome dieter's guilt.

It is not about miles or kilometres. Pedometer counts your steps, and you should take 9000-10 000 steps every day, be that in Paris or at home.

The first time I went to Paris, I lost nine pounds in a week, all of it from walking. I found that hard to believe but then I did the calculations: walking from morning to dusk was burning some 6000 kcal per day. I stopped to eat only once a day.

Even if you're not determined to walk a lot, it's easy to walk 6-8 miles per day while visiting Paris. If you don't mind seeing the city on food, you can walk 20 or more miles a day easily.

And yes I do wear a pedometer. And steps don't matter for burning calories: only the distance covered counts.

I always lose weight when I go to France. I lost around 12 pounds without trying on my last trip there which was one month long. I considered the money I spent on the vacation a bargain compared to the cost of some very pricey health and weight reduction spas. It's a great way to drop a few pounds if you want to.
