I am a very, very nervous flyer and in fact take medication to fly. I cannot tell you how many men's egos I have boosted because of my nervous flying. It starts out like this: We have a bit of turbulence. Then I look for the flight attendents to see how they are reacting. Then I scan the seats hoping to lock eyes with someone that must surely know we are in trouble. It usually ends up being some guy who thinks I am hitting on him.
Many years ago I took a "fear of flying" course at BWI given by a pilot who educated nervous flyers about the mechanics of flying. The premise is you fear what you do not understand. For me the take off sends me into a panic zone as well as turbulence. The other half of the class was taught by a psychologist who teaches that fear of flying is an irrational fear. Our mantra which we are to repeat constantly is "99.9 percent of all planes take off and land safetly.
As others have said, turbelence depends on weather and other causes like plane wake. The course did teach us however, that turbelence is more prevalent during the warmest part of the day.
