how much is gas ?tolls?
I'll be renting a car 18May-4June. MXP-FCO. I'll be travelling throughout alot of Italy and just wanted to get an idea of how much gas is and what can be expected if I use the toll roads. I know the tolls will be a different price depending on how far and which toll roads I use but any info would help. Grazie tanto

You can use the mapping service on www.michelin.com which gives expected costs in gas and tolls for trip from one place to another as you fill in.

If you are driving through "a lot" of Italy, you will be paying a lot of money in tolls!!
As for petrol, to give you an example that will vary depending on type of car; we paid about 60 euro for 3/4 of a tank of diesel two weeks ago.

Not sure where you are from, but gas prices in Italy are average by European standards. By American standards, they are obscene - $6 to $8 per gallon. Luckily, the cars are much more fuel efficient than American cars. Tolls can be expensive, especially in the North.

A better link to Michelin mapping is www.viamichelin.com.

Eks - BTW - I know you just rented a car through autoeurope but can't remember if you got the best price through the US or Europe site. We will be renting a car in Umbria for only two days but on the website it said I must rent for three days since it is p/u and d/o in a small town (Foligno). Ever hear of this type of requirement? Then we will be needing a car for the time we spend in Sicily (6 days). I found some pretty good pricing on car italy. Any advice from a seasoned traveler?

Galestorm (love the name!):
I found the best price on the AE Italian site. I phoned their US office and asked them to match it. It took 2 calls, but they did.
I have heard of that 3-day requirement. You don't actually have to keep it for 3 days, but you have to pay for three days!!! And I never heard of any small town rule! Did you also try Kemwell?
I always call them at the toll-free number--and if you do not get the answer you want the first time, you can ask for a supervisor. They (AE and Kemwell) seem eager to please.
You can also request a rental from a certain agency and they will do their best to accommodate if that agency has an office in your location. (ie Europcar, Avis, etc)
Let us know what happens!

Thanks Eks...only a few of us remember who she was. I also enjoyed the rhetoric involving whether yours was ek scrunchy or eks crunchy!
OK, it seems I might do better with some phone calls. Yes, the three day requirement only involves the euros, not how long you actually keep the vehicle!
Have you heard of caritalyandtours? They seemed to have the best pricing. Maybe $60 or so below what I saw on autoeurope.
My fingers will take an walk and let you know!

Ok, let us know. I have never heard of that outfit but that means very little. Just make sure about the details--unlimited mileage,no extra fees on pickup, insurance, etc.
And remember: AutoEurope says that they will match any price from a competitor. So call them and see if they will match the Caritaly price! I never book online for a car; I always call them.
