My husband and I will be visiting Florence in March. We would like to know if it is doable in one day or should we allot two days?

I guess it's "doable" in one day--depends on what you'd like to do, of course. I'd give it two if you can spare it. And I don't even love Florence!

Florence has a lot to see.

The Uffizi museum (Galleria degli Uffizi), which houses much famous work including Botticelli's Birth of Venus, could take a long time depending on how much you like art.

The Academia (Galleria dell'Accademia), where you'll find Michelangelo’s original sculpture of David, does not take too long.

There is also the Duomo (Santa Maria del Fiore), you can go up to the top of the dome as well as inside.

There is also a museum (Museo dell'Opera di Santa Maria del Fiore) which houses the original statues that decorate the Duomo as well as the original doors, by Ghiberti, from the Baptistery (Battistero) which is right next to the Duomo.

What is the rest of the itinerary?

We fly into Rome for four days, then we train to Bologna for a couple of days. From there we train to Florence where we might pick up a car to go to Siena and a few of the Tuscan towns. We're trying to decide on either Perugia or Asissi. How is this itinerary?

I'd choose Assisi!!! It's a great place.

Florence is one of the world's great art cities. It is the home of great Renaissance and medieval art, architecture and history. The food is glorious, the markets are wonderful, and the shopping is fabulous. I actually love Florence and spend time there every year.

I can't imagine a first trip to the area that gives Bologna two days and Florence only one. I seriously urge you to stay for two days.

I would make Bologna a daytrip from Florence, and stay in Florence.

We used Florence as an overnight stay on the way to Rome from Venice. We arrived in the morning, dropped our bags at the hotel, and managed to get on top of the Duomo, through the Uffizi and Academmia by mid-afternoon.

Even though we managed all that in a day, we certainly only scratched the surface. It was nice to see David, some da Vinci paintings and see the city from the Duomo, but I would have enjoyed at least one more day in Florence to do a little less touristy stuff and get a feel for the rest of the city.

So if you can pull it off, try to spend at least 2 days there, IMHO.

If possible, I would also focus more on Florence than Bologna. Like others mentioned, it's doable in a day, but you want time to just stroll and enjoy the city, without rushing around from sight to sight. It's a beautiful place!

I don't particularly care for Florence myself, but I agree with the others; to fully appreciate it I would give it at least two days.
