How long to get to Akureyri?

We are planning a trip to Iceland for my mom who is 100% Icelandic! Her family is from Akureyri.

How long would it take by car from Reykjavik to Akureyri in September?

We are looking at tixs on Iceland air for Iceland and Frankurt for $913 is this a fair price?

Also any recommendations where a family of 5 could stay would be great!!

Thanks so much!

1- Where are you coming from?

2- It's a long drive from R to A.

(I can't find car driving times)

The distance between Reykjavik and Akureyri is about 250 miles (400 km), if traveling from the western side of the ring road. If you drive non-stop that might take you about 6 hours. However, the western route is shorter than the eastern but also less interesting.
There are flights from Reykjavik city airport to Akureyri by Air Iceland (not to be confused with Icelandair!).
I don't know where you are traveling from, but you may perhaps reduce the cost by flying to London, for example, and then using flights to Iceland with Iceland Express, the new airline that has very inexpensive flights from some European cities.
What kind of accommodations are you interested and where?

We are going to land at the International airport at around 6:30am.

Maybe we should drive half of it and the other half the next day. We are only planning on spending 4 days in Iceland and then off to Oktoberfest.

We are looking for reasonable accomodations in both Akureyri and Reykjavik and maybe even an apartment since we will have to get two rooms.

Thanks for all the help!

Rey -Auk took us about 7-8 hours w/few stops. The great thing is that there are NO cops on the road except near Rey...we flew! Gas is $$$$$ though, worse then the rest of Europe.
What a beautiful country!

Since you only have 4 days in Iceland, I would skip Reykjavik, book a return fly Reykjavik-Akureyri-Reykjavik with Air Iceland, rent a car in Akureyri and spend the time in touring the area of Akureyri-Myvatn. There is a lot to see around this area. If you are adventurous, and don't mind the expense, I would recommend a long day tour with one of the super-jeep companies to Askja (Highlanders is a good choice). Amazing!
If you insist on staying in Reykjavik, look into the sight of Room With A View. These are small apartments and stuios right in the center of the main street. That might suit your needs. However, I really think that by staying in Reykjavik and driving 2 days back to and from Akureyri, you will not see anything.
Sorry, I have no knowledge of accommodations in Akureyri.

Well, I bought the tixs last night so now for the details.

It would cost $958 for the 5 of us to take the Air Iceland flight to get to Akureri round trip. But I think this might be the best approch based on the distance from Reyk.

Anyone know of good websites to research the area of Akureyri and how long to spend in this area?

Thanks

Have a look at http://www.eyjafjordur.is/eng/index.php

It's a fascinating area.
Be sure to visit the "Black Castles" in the Mývatn area.
There are also some beautiful waterfalls in the area.
