Theoretically possible to do this as a day trip, but not one that I'd do. Eurostar takes about 3 hrs. There's an 8:38 am train out of Florence which arrives into Venice at 11:30 am. Yes, it's "do-able" but it will be a very long, tiring day.
Hey, thank you. That site really is great.

Just another questions, is there a particular type of ticket I should be getting? (I know I am going from rome to florence for sure) I don't care about comfort and I've never taken italian trains.

pc,
You'll want to travel on the Eurostar. They are the fastest & most reliable trains. Second class is fine, especially for the Rome-Florence trip, which only takes 1.5 hrs.
