It depends on which train you take (direct or stops), the shortest one is about 3 1/2 hrs. Probably not really practical unless you take the overnight trains.

There's another thread where someone was asking about a day trip from Venice to Florence. Do a search for it and you'll find more info.

The majority said it wasn't a good idea since most of your day is taken up in train travel at 3 hours each way.

OK, let's look at total travel time. If you are within the city of Venice, you need to include the time it takes you to get to the rail station. Depending on where you are, that will probably take upwards of half an hour. Add that to the train travel time, double it, and I'll bet that in general, from your hotel in Venice until you arrive back at your hotel in Venice, you are looking at a total of 8 hours travel time. That doesn't leave a heck of a lot of time in Florence. If you insist on going, and of course Florence is indeed interesting, follow a previous bit of advice and at least take an overnight train. That action, of course, means that you will be paying for a night in your Venice hotel that you won't be using. My suggestion to you and others would be to arrange a trip that (1) allows enough time to see what you want to see in EVERY place you want to go, and (2) takes advantage of the overall itinerary to minimize hotel costs. For instance as an illustration of the second point, if your trip were arranged so that you wouldn't have to return to Venice, then you could take an overnight train to Florence, see the city, and leave at the end of the day for your next destination.

Hello Barbara,

The quickest journey time is actually 2hours 49minutes by EUROSTAR. Wayne's right of course - you'd need to add on the time it takes to get to S. Lucia Station from wherever you're staying, - but with an early start I think it's quite viable. E.g.

Dep. 06.33 Venice
Arr. 09.22 Florence

Dep. 07.29 Venice
Arr. 10.47 Florence

Dep. 08.33 Venice
Arr. 11.22 Florence

The first and third are DIRECT from S. Lucia.
The second requires a change of train at Bologna and takes longer.

For the return, here are 2 options:

Dep. 17.25 Florence
Arr. 20.37 Venice

Dep. 18.38 Florence
Arr. 21.27 Venice

For more details see:

The overnight option requires a change of train at Bologna at 02.30a.m. approx.
You also arrive in Florence at 05.17a.m., which is not ideal IMO.

Hope this helps ...
