price correction:
Some sellers (including Geographic) price the paper at $20 for the 25 pages. This site:
http://www.waterproof-paper.com/adventure-paper.html
gives a price of $10 for 25 sheets - and just $30 for 200 sheets!

We're doing France/Italy in June and I'm taking the laptop to offload digital pictures to (as well as tracking expenses in Quicken and transcribing notes on the day's activities for future posting here). I also have a Gamin iQueM4 GPS PDA which will have the same schedule/contact/whatever information in its onboard memory. So, I'll pretty much have no excuse for being lost (unless I intend to do so).
However, having technology fail me at the most inopportune times, we'll have paper copies of the important information.

Hi tomassocroccante. I am the one who wrote about the NG paper earlier in this post. I have in front of me this very moment a map we printed on our inkjet printer onto the paper. I just put it under running water to see if my memory served that it wouldn't run or tear and it won't. Doesn't affect it at all. I swear by it and will print all of our subway/city maps onto this paper for our 3 month trip. It prints crisp and clear, can't tear and the ink can't run. I like it especially for maps you will be using repeatedly day in and day out. Folding and refolding numerous times when other paper just falls apart at the seams. I think it's a great find.

I wish I had known about waterproof paper last fall while traveling in Germany. Waiting for a train, I felt water dripping on my leg and realized it was coming from my day pack. I didn't tighten a water bottle cap enough and it leaked and destroyed all paper documents I had in the pack. Luckily, except for the guidebook, I had duplicate copies of my itinerary, hotel reservations and airline e-ticket information in my suitcase. I plan on buying some for future use. Good tip!

And somewhere one of our mapmakers or guidebook publishers might now step up and create high quality, waterproof, tearproof maps to begin with! They would quickly have an edge over the competition.
I will be ordering some of the paper and trying it out - my only doubt is whether the detail from my printer will or can match that of a printed map. On the other hand, with my own maps, I can enlarge and make all the type bigger than 4 pt!
