My husband is the one in our family! At home he prefers to wear each shirt and each pair of pants ONCE before washing. Although he is not so rigid on a trip, he definitely believes that more is more! Our solution? Laundry! In Greece it was a pleasure and a bargain; in Paris we almost had to mortgage the house. But if it keeps us both happy, it's worth it. And I admit that I enjoy something fresh too.

On the schlepping issue, we each handle our own, so I can't complain. And I have come to realize that women have a significant advantage in that their clothes and shoes are simply SMALLER! Maybe that's why some of us always grab one more thing...

Unless a person has some kind of a physical infirmity, I see no reason why they can't carry whatever it is they choose to bring with them on a trip.

Go with the tough love - believe me it is the ONLY cure...I am a former overpacker and cured my disease when I went on a trip with a friend rather than a boyfriend...by day three I wanted to throw my suitcase in the warm aegean waters...dragging the damn thing up the stairs...pushing it down...

Tell her it will be good for her arms...and that defined arms are sexy! (warning this may also get you in big trouble!)

Dear John:
I have read these post and I am either lucky or my husband is smart. We always travel with whatever we need. As I have stated in previous discussions we have on average 4-8 bags and have never had a problem getting our bags where they needed to be.
We just got back from a lovely vacation. We started with 5 bags and came home with 6. This was light for us. My husband packed our nice wines in his carry on. We had 14 bottles. He complained once, I offered to "pull" the bag and he gave me a look as if I had insulted him...
He would NEVER say pack what you can carry. I am his wife and would NEVER tolerate such behavior or attitude from him EVER.

John: you have to go with what will work in your marriage. If your wife is a packer like me then I say, you knew that when you married her...make it fun, tell her for every time you take her bag/s when you would perfer not to then she has to "pay" you...Be creative and remember, a trip is for a few days, weeks or months but a marriage lasts a lifetime.

My Best!
Oaktown
Most of you are so lucky. I can't stand to wear the same shoes day after day, so I take two pair of walking shoes and 1 pair of dressy shoes. I just weighed my shoes and they weigh 3 lps apiece. I wear size 15 triple wide so 2 pair would fill my carry on. I'm also one of those who have to shop at tall man shops so my clothes also take quite a bit of room. My solution is a carryon with wheels and a good size duffel bag that I can attach to my roll-on. It is inconvenient at times, but I also figure that I am an ambassador for my country and dress accordingly
Regards
Art
Maybe I just have a sweet wife. But I asked her to go to smaller bags (we went from 30" to 26") because I just couldn't keep carrying the large bags up 3 floors to our room. She said no problem. Remember in most small hotels you will have to carry your own bags.
