How do I get from London to Scotland?

Hi,

Could you please suggest the EASIEST way to get from Central London to Edinburgh or Glasgow? Would you suggest a train or fly? Also, which of those 2 cities do you reccomend we go to first. We would only like to spend 2 days in Scotland before flying to Ireland. We are interested in night life, museums, etc.

Thank you!
Natalie

From Central london, I would suggest you take the fast train from Euston Station to Edinburgh Waverley, and spend the day there. Then take a train from Waverley or Haymarket to Glasgow for your day there; then get the train to Prestwick and fly Ryanair to Dublin.

That lot is based on ease, not time or cost.

Will you have 2 clear days apart from your travel time?

We fly into London Stansted at 12:35 on 7/13. We are going to stay in South Kensingston 2 nights (13th & 14th) and then we would like to spend 2 nights in Scotland(15th & 16th). We have a flight leaving Edinburgh at 16:25 on 7/17. I'm not really sure of how long the traveling is going to be...

If you are booking the train last minute...i.e. only a few days before you want to travel it will probably be more expensive than a flight.

I would fly. There are some good cheap deals around if you fly at an unsociable non business hour. Am not sure if you would go from Heathrow or Stanstead, but both are a short train ride from the centre of London

I've done this journey all ways, and have concluded that the fat train that Sheila mentioned is the easiest way to go. Sure the plane is quicker and often cheaper, but factor in the additional travelling time and cost to get to the airport, plus check-in times, and the train works out hardly slower or much more expensive. It';s also an extremely pleasant journey.

Ruby, are you flexible enough to change your plans to get the sleeper on the night of the 14th?

That would give you 2 whole days and a bit in Scotland. Mind you, the journey's so short, it might not be worth it....

Since writing the foregoing, I've checked and the last train is 5.37pm. and it gets in at 10.20pm.

Thank you so much for all of your help!! The FastTrain looks like what we are going to do. We are already taking so many little flights around Europe that we decided to change it up a bit. This is the greatest forum ever. I will be traveling a ton in the future just because of this site...wild how a little information and advice can change someone's lifestyle

I recommend easyjet! Did it from Aberdeen to London, in an hour. It was great.
