As the original poster of this thread, I'm amazed at all of the negative comments! There were some positive ones too...

Update: We've moved to France! Permanently. Not to the Loire as originally planned, but Brittany. We found a beautiful small chateau on 40 acres. We viewed it once and moved in 6 months later. Loving living in France.

Funny to revisit this thread. Happy travels to everyone.

I don't see the housewarming invitation anywhere.

Good for you, best to ignore the negative comments & get on with your life in your beautiful château.*

Don't worry about the negative comments. They are normal. Sometimes I fear reading on when I see a post about someone wanting to move to Europe as the responses are so predictable (you know that you can't just decide to move somewhere....you know, you need to know the language...you know, you ....blah blah...you know...basically I'm the only one who can move to Europe...). Take comfort that someone on this thread who was chastising you for too few visits to your target region(s) once started asking this forum about buying a house in Eastern Europe but had never set foot in the countries she was asking about.

@brilliantsulk congratulations and thanks for the update. I'm glad you found something that met your dreams. We too ended up not buying in our original target area. Anything you'd like to share regarding the switch? I'm just curious how Brittany ended up being your final area.

I love the shade from walkinaround, as well.

OMG People! I was up way past my bedtime reading this, only to see this morning that the thread was two years old. I must be better about checking the damn dates! Anyway, lots of interested stuff in here; my husband would love to find something in Italy, probably something small, even an apartment rental, so the thread was still pretty illuminating, if not outdated for certain issues. He has cousins still there, but because his grandfather did something stupid, something to do with relinquishing his citizenship after immigrating? I don't really know the details, but things seem complicated. I'm not quite ready to retire, but I guess we better start doing our research now.

To the OP - so glad you found your perfect place. I'm envious.

Relinquishing citizenship does not automatically make the descendants guilty. You can probably get an Italian passport through ancestry.
