I don't know your budget, but we really liked the Pensione Accademia and a must see is Peggy Guggenheim's house/Museum a few blocks away. http://www.pensioneaccademia.it/index-e.html

We stayed in the Hotel Antica Venezia the weekend before last for 110 euros per night, booked through Venere. It was just round the corner from San Marco and full of character. Buy a day pass for the vaporreto and get the number 1 up the Grand Canal and back, which takes about 90 minutes from San Marco, if you don't get off. Get the lift up the campanile for a birds eye view of Venice, obviously don't miss the basilica and Doge's palace and wander round the narrow streets, away from the tourist areas to get a real feel for the place.

Good morning, we have stayed at the following; HOTEL ALA, LA FENICE, DO POZZI and the SATURNIA, over many years and have been satisified with staff and accomodations of each.
