In San Francisco my two choices for best value are:
Hotel Cornell at 715 Bush. It's an old style French Hotel that has a parking garage across the street. They serve a small breakfast in the basement that has a very French middle ages look. Last time I stayed it was about $20 per day for parking.

Holiday Inn in the financial district. It's a huge hotel with parking in the basement. But on weekends it's sometimes possible to obtain very inexpensive rooms by calling the hotel directly. The hotel is a short walk to North Beach and Union Square.

I would call both places directly and maybe they can work out a good price.

I don't know what type of room uhoh_busted reserved at the Due Torri. But as of this year for July a family room which is one room plus a small windowless room with bathroom in the middle of both rooms is going for 248 euro/night with breakfast. This is their special rate as the rack rate is 315 euro.

I would e-mail Hotel Julia to see if they can accomodate you. Also if you click on "lodging house" in the bottom left hand corner, they have an apartment that you can rent for 4 people at a significantly higher rate of 230E-320E.

What europeans call a "big bed" is usually only a double bed.

Let me put in a plug for the little, but mighty, Hotel Sonya on Via Viminale, directly across from the Teatro d'Opera.

I was directed to this inexepensive, cozy little gem through a website called clickinternational.com that friends in Italy use.

We had a good-sized double room with private bath,TV with English channels, nice litte breakfast room, quiet with very attractive modern furnishings for 98 Euro per night. It was the week before Christmas so this was not a bargain basement season in Rome (is there one?).

The hotel is run by two young women and a lovely white husky who live on the premises. Their English was adequate to the extent of assisting in helping my daughter and I hook up after missed flights from Milan.

I will use this hotel again and will also check out clickinternational.com for other Italian destinations.

debbeymer, Check out the Hotel Duca d'Alba at www.hotelducadalba.com for our favorite little hotel in Rome. It's a couple of blocks from the Colusseum and is charming, very clean, with a helpful staff. The rates will vary but you can email them from the website. We've sent many friends there and they've all loved the place.

Someone on this board suggested "sleepinitaly".com.They do B&B.We are considering staying with them for 5 nights in April.Their rate is 130 euros.Anyone have any experience with their oferings???

i was fairly pleased. and felt they represented the place accurately.

This past summer we went to rome with our two children and we stayed at the Hotel Alimani (check fodors rants and raves site). We reserved a quad room for $140 (euros). When we showed up the quad rooms were already gone so instead they gave us two doubles right next to each other that were very comfortable. They honored the quad price so we didn't pay any exta. They do have some reserved parking so I highly suggest you reserve a spot when you make your reservation. The cost was $15 a day, but they were so nice that they said no charge. They took our car, parked it in a covered garage next door and brought it to us when we checked out. Everything was very safe. Breakfast is included and very substantial and is served on their roof top terrace. The hotel is simple, but very clean with good airconditioning. Plus hotel is located right next door to st. peters and all the museums. Since there were 4 of us, it was cheaper to travel by taxi than metro or bus. The hotel would call us a taxi and we were on our way very quickly. The final great thing about this hotel is that they got us tickets to the papal audience. The Alimani family which runs this hotel is very nice and we will stay there again next time. Some great gelato around the corner at "bridge gelato". We stayed there in 2001. Nice room. Good breakfast. Location was pretty quiet as far as Rome goes. Nice rooftop area to sip wine after a long day. I believe a superior room runs about 200 Euros. Near Piazza del Popolo. Have fun.

We were in Rome in Oct. 2003 and stayed at the Hotel Lancelot. It's within walking distance to the Coliseum. Very nice. 145 Euro/night. Couldn't have been happier with our choice. Nice staff. Helped with with tickets, bus info, tourist info. Big and clean rooms with a queen size bed. Private bath. Nice hot water and water pressure. I'd definitely stay there again. We could look out the hall balcony and see the Coliseum - at night it's lighted. So nice. We had a car and they parked it on site. The property is gated. I was quite at night. Great breakfasts too! I highly recommend Hotel Teatro Di Pompeo. It is centrally located and you can walk to most major attractions (ancient Rome, Vatican, Pantheon, Spanish Steps) however we were there in early September 2003 when the weather was warm. Hotel is also very close to 2 very nice local plazas - Campo di Fiori (local market and tavernas) and Piazza Navona (historic plaza with nice restaurants). Hotel room was around $150 which included breakfast. We made our reservations and cooresponded directly with the hotel by eamil which worked very well. We also arranged limo pick up at the airport through the hotel and this also worked well.

You have to be issued a special permit to park in many areas of Rome. You may want to check into that before you decide on a hotel.

We stayed at Hotel Aberdeen near Piazza Navona (and very close to Termini station where you can drop off your car and pick it up when you leave if necessary). Rooms are small but clean. Free internet access, safe neighborhood, close to metro and busses and not bad walking to major sites.

Hotel Julia near the Trevi was nice, safe, and clean.

I just returned from a bed & breakfast on Via de Banchi Vecchi, near Campo de Fiori. Beautiful room, great location and very reasonable. Check out the website www.banchivecchi115.com

Most of the prices in the responses here are for double rooms. Booking sites and even hotel websites, rarely mention quads, you have to contact the hotel directly and ask. They may only have 1 or 2 such rooms and they will be quite a bit more than a double. We stayed in a quad (2 room suite) at the Santa Chiara 3 years ago. Back then it was around $250. We had a car for 1 night in Rome. Our hotel directed us to a garage near Trevi fountain. I think it was about $25/day.
