Hotels in Rome..OUCH

Can anyone recommend a nice hotel in Rome that isn't 300.00 a night? I don't care about fancy I'm only sleeping there, however I would like it to be safe, clean and have secured parking. All suggestions would be appreciated. I had no idea they were so expensive there!!

Hi, try venere.com for alot of good hotels that are more inexpensive or stay at a convent (altho they might have curfews). I would advise against staying outside of the center to save money though, there are some good choices if you search a while.

Hi debbeymer,

My family recently stayed in Rome for 10 nights at the Hotel Miami on Via Nazionale. For us it was nearly perfect at 140 Euros per night.

The room was what they called a quad room: large bed in one room and two large chairs that became beds in another room.

Good luck,

Mike

When you say "isn't $300 a night" - - does $280 count? or do you really mean $ONE-eighty?

And why do you need parking at all? Do you own a car IN Europe? or are you leasing? Otherwise rent before and after Rome only. Or if you are leasing, then the big underground car parking at Borghese is really quite trustworthy.

Best wishes,

Rex

If you can do without parking, Hotel Brittania was about $225/nite. It is on a narrow street off the Via Nazionale. Breakfast was included. Clean, nothing fancy, friendly and attentive staff. Might be more now with the Euro up and the dollar down.

Well Rex, considering last time we went to Germany,France and Italy we stayed in nice places and none of them were more than 140.00 a night for four of us. However, we didn't go to Rome and I was just surprised that the hotel rooms were that much...ignorance is bliss I guess. So, the difference between 200.00 a night and 300.00 a night when we are staying for 3 nights is a big deal. The reason for having a car is because we are in Europe for 3 weeks total and I have been advised on HERE that car theft is high in Rome and to make sure you have secured parking if you are driving to Rome. I can not depend on the fact that the rental agencies will have a car the size we need for the remaining 2 weeks we will be there and I would say that is an important reason not to give up the car upon our arrival. I have found the posts here very informational and believe what I read here and other sites. Are you saying that parking in Rome is easy, available at ease and always secure?
Pardon me if I read your response the wrong way but it sounded as if you were coming down on me.

No, I am ot coming down on you. I just want you to clarify what you ar seeking. It's true, there is sticker shock at hotels all over Europe for Americans who have been there in the past.

It's just that if you really want under $220 then say so. If you want under $160, then say that. And if under $300 is okay, then say that.

As for parking, I am saying that an attended, enclosed garage is as good as you are going to find. I am not certain that there is no such thing, but it must be incredibly rare to find a hotel that has attended parking ON PREMISES in the city of Rome.

That Borghese car park sems 100% safe and reliable to me, and it's a public facility.

Oh, amd one more thing. Hertz (and several others) have rental locations right IN that Borghese sottoterraneo. In the exceedingly unlikely event that your car would be stolen and vandalized while there, you are right at their desk to get them to deal with it.

Thanks Rex for setting me straight. I would love to find (like anyone else) the cheapest hotel I can but I know that usually comes at a cost. In your opinion, can I get a nice hotel for around 170.00 or should I stay closer to the 250.00 mark. I have never been there so I need all the advice I can get. Good tip on the Borghese, I will keep that in mind. By secured I didn't mean attended by, I meant just safe. I have read several posts on here about peoples cars being vandalized and stolen from open parking areas around Rome. I know enough from reading that I don't want to drive in Rome so I was hoping to get to the hotel and park it for 3 days I am glad to hear from someone that Rome is not such a bad place for getting your car stolen! Any other info you can pass along to make my visit to Rome enjoyable please do.

The Hotel Polo is quite nice and very affordable. Prob. in the $130-150 per night range. It's in the Parioli district, an elegant residential neighborhood on the northwest side of Villa Borghese. I think there's parking, and it's about 2 blocks from the Cottral train station (1 stop away from the Flaminio station, where you can connect to the metro)

The cheapest hotel you can get would probably be in a terribly distant location from all the things you want to see, or have no private bathroom, have decrepit furniture or peeling paint - - or all of the above. I suspect that you don't really mean it when you say want the cheapest hotel.

It's really up to you to think about the overall budget for this trip, and decide what is appropriate for you. Then, like everyone, you want the best VALUE for that price. And you know best whether you value location, a/c, elevators, style or amenities most.

I know this can be frustrating. I am tryig to find the "best value" hotel for 12 nights (actually 4 rooms, 3 nights) for this May (in San Francisco), and I am racking my brain. I at least have the option of sending my (Los Angeles) daughter on a scouting trip to help decide - - and even then, I am going to have to wrestle with whether to Priceline or Hotwire or not.

You have this forum, you have venere.com and don't forget that it can be helpful to ask a hotel to send you a plain old-fashioned brochure, through the (snail) mail.

You CAN find your dream deal place, at the price that's right for you.

I second Hotel Julia. 160 Euros for a double this past September. Simple, clean and well-located on a quiet street that is walkable to many major sites. Their website states they have parking available.

I actually checked out the Hotel Julia and I was sold until I was reading that all they had was a "big" bed and a twin bed. I have my husband and 2 young teens....I would like to find 4 twins or 1 big bed with 2 twins. Has anyone stayed there that had 4 people in their party?

we stayed at Hotel Due Torri a couple of years ago and loved it. I'm sure it is under $300/night...we may have paid about $160. Who knows where it is now, with the dollar vs the Euro. The location was terrific, a couple blocks from Piazza Navona

Oh and Rex, where in SF do you want to stay..downtown, peir area, golden gate area, or outside town? What kind of hotel are you looking for? I just want a clean, safe hotel that is fairly close to the sites of Rome with a private bathroom. We don't lounge in the room, we are out and about taking it all in!!

The Hotel Polo sounds interesting; any number of people would say that this hotel gives up (convenience of) location for some nice features - - but how do you book it?

I tried three differet dicount booking sites, for random dates in Feb, Apr, Jun and September in all came back no availability. And that includes this one - - http://hotel-polo-rome.world-hotel-network.com which lists rates as 216 to 365.

This is what Debbeymer is trying to cope with. It's a big ouch.

Debbeymer - - see http://www.fodors.com/forums/threads...p;tid=34468946

We want Nob Hill or Union Square EAST or Embaracadero - - and we want the kind of lucky deal from Priceline that is cited quite often on www.biddingfortravel.com - - rooms that go for $300 rack rate - - and only have to pay $60-80/room/night.

It could happen.

Though Priceline is such a roulette.
