Hotels in Rome
I just decided to go to Rome in mid October. Unfortunately I can not find an affordable hotel ($175 max). I am considering staying outside the city center. Does anyone have a suggestion of a hotel and area where there is good transportation to the center and a nice area in the evenings?

The Hotel Delle Muse comes highly recommended. There is supposed to be good bus service to the center and other areas. I have not stayed there.
I assume you have already checked Venere.com. If you haven't you probably should do so asap.

Ruben, Try the Hotel Smeraldo, near the Campo dei Fiori/Piazza Navona. Doubles are 140E and it is immaculate, with 2 rooftop terraces! www.smeraldoroma.com
Enjoy!

Try these: Hotel Morgana on Via Filippo Turati, it's near Termini Station.
Hotel Corot (www.hotelcorot.it) check the rates they are within your price range. It's near Termini Station.
Hotel Patria (near Via Nazionale).
Eva's rooms (a bed and breakfast if you want to try it) is near the Spanish Steps.
Roman and Italian Bed and Breakfast (near San Giovanni, owned by Mircea and wife, has received pretty good reviews, plus it' next to Manzoni Subway station)http://www.italianbandb.com/

We have stayed at the Casa della Palma twice in Rome, and highly recommend it. It is in a residential section of Rome, so you would need to jump the trams and/or buses, but there is a stop at the corner and it is very handy, we went all over Rome. They have a web page, here it is:

We stayed in Room #44 - it was wonderful. They arranged for driver to pick us up at the airport. Alessandro, the owner, is very personable and we corresponded through email long before we went over.

The last time I was in Otaly I went on priceline 3 days before I was going ot be in Rome and requested a 5 star hotel for $100. We got one right away ans stayed at star hotel. It was very nice. We are gettign married next July in Florence and are suggesting this to our guests who plan on expanding their trips.

I would highly recommend checking out lastminute.com. You can narrow your search by your budget and a neighborhood. I had short notice once on a trip to Florence, and obtained excellent results and a wonderful rate on a hotel exactly where I wanted to be.

I stayed at the Delle Muse 2 years ago and was very pleased. There is a bus service from very near the hotel to the centre and the manager is extremely helpful. There is not a lot to do in the area in the evening but the hotel had a lovely terrace restaurant / bar and we spent some time there when we didn't want to take the bus. The hotel was very good value, clean, nice rooms and decent breakfast. Yes, it would be nice to stay in a more central hotel but ofcourse you pay for that convenience.

www.hrs.com lists several under $175--most on the outskirts of the city, but several near the train station and others near the Villa Borghese park.

I don't recommend staying in the outskirts at all. The underground/metro/tube system is very basic and probably won't go all the way out to the outskirts. Which means you'll have to use the buses which can be erratic since the traffic in Rome can be quite intense. Having said this it all depends which outskirts you're looking at!
Though seriously don't give up look at romeby.com being near the Campo dei fiori, or pantheon or piazza di spagna will add so much to your vacation!

we just returned from Rome and stayed in Hotel in Parione (literally just around the corner from Hotel Smeraldo - which was booked when we were there). For 7 euro, guests at Hotel in Parione eat at Hotel Smeraldo. Would stay there again. www.inparione.com/english_site/dove.htm
