well, where IS europe2003..? Everyone is offering suggestions, and we don't even know what europe2003 is looking for, since he/she hasn't come back to clarify things.

If budget is your main concern, you'd probably like the Hotel Zum Weissen Kreuz. I just got back from 2 nights there. Location is fantastic - in middle of old town, one block up from river. They do have breakfast buffet. The room was very, very basic, but clean . No AC.

Good luck.

Sorry - forgot to put the rates for Zum Weissen Kreuz in my previous post!

We had a double (two twin beds pushed together) for about $108 USD per night.

Bath had a shower only.

We stayed at the Des Balances last year and got a lovely river view room for CH 192. I contacted the hotel directly by email. Another nice 3* hotel directly across the square from Des Balances is the Krone Hotel, also a Best Western.

We just returned from a wonderful vacation in Austria and Switzerland. We stayed at the Palace in Lucerne overlooking the lake. It was wonderful. However, we found Switzerland to be the most expensive country we've visited in the past 10 years--not because of the hotel. Everything was pricey--I don't believe "budget" or "cheap" is part of the Swiss culture. But perhaps by the time you go the dollar will have zoomed upwards and the Swiss Franc downward.

But we did enjoy every moment of the 4 days in Lucerne and vicinity.

Just of clarify, the lake is Lake Luzern (or Vierwaldstattersee to the locals). Not Lac Leman (which is Lake Geneva) as ThinGorjus wrote.
