Hotels in Lisbon city center
Help!! Anyone know of a nice hotel in Lisbon, near the Eduardo Park or city center. We are planning on staying in the city and doing day trips to surrounding area. Any thoughts, or suggestions. Not looking for deluxe, so much as charm.

Cammy, I will recommend to you the Hotel Mundial in Baixa. It is a new hotel with an older wing. It doesn't have alot of charm, but it is centrally located, clean, modern, and has a rooftop breakfast room with stunning views of old Lisbon and the Tagus.

You don't really want to stay all the way up by Eduardo Park anyway because it is too far from the places you will want to see, like Alfama, Chiado, Biarro Alto, Castelo Sao Jorge, etc..

Hi. by the way, if you're arriving by airplane, then you should know that the Aerobus, is the best option to get to the Baixa district. Exit in Rossio, if you're going 2 stay at hotel Mundial, then go to Praça da Figueira, and on your left, there is a small street where the hotel is.
In Praça da Figueira, you can also take the bus that goes to the castle, and the tram to Belém, so...yes the location of Hotel Mundial is really good.

Marko, my boyfriend, Keith, and I never ate at the restaurant(s) in the Mundial, other than the included breakfast which was served in the rooftop breakfast room.

I can recommend my friend's restaurant to you, which is in Bairro Alto. It is called STASHA, at 29 Rua das Gaveas.

In January we stayed at the Residencial Florescente which is right in the center of the city. Very inexpensive (I think it was $40 euros per night) and very charming in a sort of inexpensive way. Our room was on the 5th floor and had a vast bathroom. The only caveat would be that cars are not allowed on the street where the hotel is so you have to haul your bags about half a block. This was OK for me but might not be for some people.

See my comments on Fodor's review of the hotel--their information was a little out of date from what I observed.

There's no restaurant at the Florescente.

If you are looking for nicer, the Metropole on the Rossio looked very nice in an Art Deco kind of a way. I think it was $130 Euros/night. And Fodors likes their breakfast.

Enjoy your trip!

Just a comment on Hotel Residencial Florescente in Lisbon that another person recommended. I agree with what was said except that our room was dirty and smelled of urine. Another room likely would have been better, so you will want to inspect a room before taking it. The person at the front desk spoke English and was most helpful. Except for the smell, we liked staying there.

We were in Lisbon in October. We stayed at the Marriot (rated 4 stars) in the eastern(?} part of the city. However, public transportation is both convenient and cheap; taxi service is very reasonable (especially if there is more than one person). We drove to Lisbon but used subways, busses, and taxis, while we were there... without any problems.

We got our reservations through Priceline.com for $67.00/day. With all taxes etc. the rate was $76.00/day. Parking was an additional $8.00/day. It was a really nice hotel.

Being away from the city center was not a problem. We did not feel uncomfortable walking from the subway to our hotel at midnight.

I wouldn't advise driving in the city center unless you are familiar with Lisbon. If you are you also know about the congestion... enough said.

Feel free to E-mail me.

Just returned from Portugal last week. Our last 3 days were in Lisbon, staying at the Hotel Lisboa Plaza. $140/night for a double. Well located halfway betwen Eduardo Park and the Rossio, about a block off Avenida da Liberdade across from the Avenida Metro station. Very quiet, charming, great buffet restaurant, large lounge/bar, room was good sized, including queen bed, sofa, desk, satellite TV. Very helpful staff. Very easy to walk or take the metro to most places. I'd stay there again.

Good luck.
