I'm trying to make sure I've accounted for most everything in my vacation budget for our trip to Italy in September, and I just realized that one thing I haven't considered is the room tax that may be added onto our hotel bills. I know in the some US cities it can be pretty hefty - is it the same way in Italy? If so, what is the add-on tax rate in Florence, Bologna and Venice?

I don't know if it's a legal requirement in Italy, but every hotel we've ever booked there has included taxes, service charges, and breakfast (if furnished) in the quoted price.

You should be able to go to the websites of any hotels you are considering to see for certain.

Taxes have always been included for all the hotels I've stayed in. However, when looking at rates, I have noticed that US-based hotels (e.g. Hilton, Marriott) sometimes do not include the taxes in quoted rates. Check your reservation and the hotel's website.

Agree that the prices are almost all quoted with tax and service included. If not - it is often the same as the regular VAT - in the area of 15-20%.

When you book your hotel, you should ask if the price includes bkfst, VAT and service.
