Hotel suggestions in Paris
Hi. I'm thinking of traveling to Paris for a few days towards the end of the month. I would like to stay in a hotel in a bustling location with shops, cafe, sites, etc. Any comments about Hotel Napoleon? Near Arc de Triomphe? Would you suggest this area? I'm in my early 30s and will be traveling alone so safety and location are important. I've been to Paris before, but years ago. Thanks to those who write comments!

I suggest the Hotel des Saints Peres. It is in the 6th on the Left Bank and is surrounded by good restaurants, shopping, cafes, etc. It is just a block from the Blvd. St. Germain but on a quiet street. The hotel is pleasant, friendly, charming and within your price range. We have found the area very safe and love the location which is very central for walking to the sights and provides eash access to the Metro.

I would suggest aither of three hotels we've liked a lot and they seem to meet your criteria:
On Ile St. Louis, either the Lutece or the Deux Iles...the island is a great place to "live" while in Paris....easy to get to either bank of the Seine. (Both are on this website as they are sister hotels just a few doors from one another)

One other, in the Marais district on the right bank, near City Hall and the Pompidou:
Hotel Duo...excellent, active location. rates about $200...very minimalistic modern design, completely redesigned, refurnished and repainted in the last year. We liked it very much, and would return to any of these three establishments! Have referred family and friends to each.

Thank you for your suggestions. I'm open for more options or what area would you suggest a single traveler to stay? I'm ok traveling around the city by metro since I live in NYC. I just want to feel secure in the evenings.

I've always heard wonderful things about the Hotel Saints Peres, but each time I've inquired they've been fully-booked, so they may not have space for you later this month.
As a woman who often travels solo, beware of hotel rooms labeled as single rooms in Paris (and other places.) They are sometimes cell-like in size and ambiance.
Inquire about size (square meters) of single rooms vs doubles, and inquire about a favorable rate for "single use of a double room."
I very much like the Hotel Delavigne in the 6th; great location, metro and RER stops 5 minutes away, lots of restaurants and cafes. www.hoteldelavigneparis.com
I have a long file on Paris; if you'd like to see it, email me at

I just recieved a promotion from the Sol Melia hotel group; they have five hotels in Paris. The best one, a ****, is on rue Cambon,a quiet street and just off Place Concorde. You will love this central location, and the price! Check out www.solmelia.com.

I'll second tower's recommendation for the hotels on Ile St Louis. To me this is a perfect place to stay, interesting shops, restaurants on island, but quieter at night. 2 min walk to Seine, 5 min walk to Notre Dame, Left Bank and Right Bank a bridge away, access to RER for airport nearby. I've stayed there a couple of times.

My wife and I have used the following and have been very pleased:
> Hotel Pas de Calais- steps from blvd Sainte Germaine and famous restaurants, many shops, etc. Has a web site. Check it out.
> Hotel le Sainte Beuve- close to metro, on quiet side street but close to nice restaurants. Etc. Also has web site.
Wish I was going, even with the price of the euro!

I forgot to add that the part of the 1st eme that I referenced above has probably the greatest concetration of single travelers in Paris. Mainly due to the number of hotels which cater to business people etc. If you end up here let me know; I am familiar with restaurant scene in the area.

You might want to check the Hotel Brighton...Rue du Rivoli. It's across from the Tuilleries Gardens, to the left you see the Louvre, to the right is a veiw of the Eiffel Tower, and Rue du Rivoli is VERY bustling with traffic, shops, restaurants etc... '
Well lit and a good location.'Also close to the Rue du Opera (?) or the diagonal street "toward" the opera. City bus comes right in front of Hotel, I think.
