Just returned and HIGHLY recommend a trip to Mont St Michel and a stay at the Auberge Saint Pierre. What a magnificent magical place - it would be a shame to go all that way and to stay on the mainland vs. the mont. On our 9pm walk around the rampart and the main street we only ran into 2 other people - we felt as if we were the only ones there. lots of cats though! thanks for everyone's recommendations.

We had a lovely time, and I got by very well on my one year of college French.

My husband and i were so entranced by the place that we decided to wake up early to see the sun rise. We got a wakeup call for 6:30, showered, got dressed, still pitch black at 7:15!!! we went back to sleep for another half hour and it was still dark!! So we went to breakfast. When we departed at 8:30 (so early to drive to Saint Mere Eglise and then to Bayeux) it was just starting to get light and I just got some delightful pictures back today from that morning.

When we were walking around Mont Saint Michel at 9:30 the previous evening, we climbed all the way up to the base of the cathedral, which was of course closed. The steps up to the door are enclosed but at the very top there is an opening. We stood at the base of the door and looked up to see a space filled with the night sky and clouds floating by. I felt like we were standing at the base of Dracula's castle!! It was silent except for the cooing of a few pigeons. Just then, we set off the motion detector which turned on a light on the door and I jumped and I think screamed a little!! The whole place was beautiful but very spooky too - it was a full moon and I think I may have heard a werewolf on the moors. November was definitely a great time to be in Normandy - few tourists. wonderful trip. the hotel's food was soso but maybe thats just us.
