Hotel Porto Roca
Hi - Has anyone ever stayed at the Hotel Porto Roca in Monterosso? Am going to take my 14 year old son to the Cinque Terre next year and am trying to decide which town to stay in. Was considering Santa Margherita Ligure but it seems a long way to travel to walk the Cinque Terre Trails. Your suggestions would be great.

Robin, It is a wonderful hotel and the
setting is the best, but it is not cheap

Santa Margherita is too far. Your next
best options are Levanto and Portovenere

Access to the CT will depend on when--the trains do not run all year and they make the logistics much simpler.
We stayed at the the Hotel Porto Roca and loved it. Got up really early one morning and took the train south to Riomaggiore and walked back to Monterosso. It took about 8 hours and was a relatively easy walk. You can always pick up the train in one of the five towns if you decide not to walk back the whole way.

I agree that staying in one of the Cinque Terre towns is most convenient and I have always read good reviews about this hotel. I did however stay in Santa Margherita and the train trip was only about 40 min. It was easy to get to the CT towns and back for a long, one-day excursion.
Ellen

We've stayed at the Porto Roca and in Portovenere (only because we couldn't get a reservation at teh PR) The Porto Roca is great---and when you are there you are IN cinque Terre. We've sent two friends there and they also loved it.

We walked from Monterossa to Vernazza and it was spectacular. Book early and have a great time.

Nina and others, If you still want to stay on Monterosso then go to this site:
www.cinqueterre.it---you will find one
more 4 star[Palme] and about 6 3 stars.
I have done the Pasquale and it was OK.
The other best 4 star in the area is the
G.H. Portovenere in that town. I still
think it is a great destination but it
is not actually part of the CT and is
not on the train line.

We stayed at the Hotel Porto Roca three years ago and loved it. If you like a sea view, ask for a room with a terrace. The room was fairly small and plain but the view was fantastic. We had fruit, wine, and cheese on our nice little terrace. Great memory!
