Hotel Pas de Calais or other Paris 6th arr. hotel recs

Has anyone stayed at Hotel Pas de Calais in Paris in the 6th? The pictures on their site look very nice. Or if anyone has any other recommendations for hotels in the 6th that are nice and maybe funky/contemporary, not stuffy, but under $200/night. Thanks.

Pas de Calais looks just ok to me. I'd prefer Hotel St. Thomas d'Aquin or Hotel Verneuil (slightly higher than $200/night for a deluxe double room). Both are listed as being in the 7th district but they are on the border of the 6th.

Hey Nuptse:

I stayed at the Pas de Calais in November 02. I had a room with a balcony on the 5th floor (if I remember correctly), and paid 115euros/night.

The room was small, fine for me because I was alone, but would be a little cramped for 2 people. The bathroom, however, was large and modern.

My room didn't look as good as those on the website, but was quite comfy, and well heated (it was chilly and rainy during my stay). I have to say though that for the price, I expected a little more, but you're paying for the location.

At the moment, I can't think of a contemporary hotel for under $200 in the 6th. However, for cozy and well located in the 5th: Hotel du Pantheon where I stayed last December in another small but very cute room (beamed ceilings, tapestry on the walls) with a view on the top floor.

In the 6th also check out:
Hotel St. Paul
Hotel du Globe (no elevator, but well located).

Depending on when you're going and how long you're staying, you might consider doing what I do which is dividing my time between the right and left banks (usually the 5th or 6th, and 4th or 11th), to take advantage of the variety those arrondisements have to offer. You'll definitely find more "funk" in the 3rd, 4th, and 11th!

Keep us posted on what you find.

We stay at the Hotel des Saints-Peres in the same block. The location is ideal. The Pas de Calais looks very nice from the outside with an attractive lobby. Can't tell you much about the rooms but I understand they are typically small.

I've read good things about the Grand Hotel des Balcons.

My wife and I have stayed at this hotel. In fact, we are returning to Paris next month and will stay there again. Very good location and nice hotel. We have also stayed at Le Sainte Beuve. Both have websites. Also check: <www.parisby.com/accommod/arr_6_paris.htm>
for more hotels in the 6th. Have fun.
