Hotel Neri vs. H1898

Family with 2 teenage boys visiting Barcelona in June for the first time. Which hotel would be a better location for a 3 night stay?

Or other recommendation....We'll book 2 rooms. Would like to pay under $250 per night per room.

Booking even a classic double at the 1898 may be difficult based on your budget. The Rack Rate is 250€/night (about $325), but you may be able to find a better deal if you are there over the weekend.

This is probably the best 4-star Gran Lux hotel in Barcelona and is exceptional in every way. Along with everything else they offer there is a heated pool on the roof (reserved for guests only) and another on the lower lever, along with a spa. The hotel is very service oriented and well located in Las Ramblas.

The Hotel Neri is in the same price range, but not quite a luxurious.

Thank you Robert. I've sent an inquiry to the hotel. We'll see what rate they offer. We like the look and location of the hotel. It might warrant the splurge.

H1898 has given me the following rates:
Classic 250E
Superior 300E

I think we will splurge. Apparently no break for the weekend. I know there is an FS Barcelona football game that weekend. We're actually trying to get tickets. Maybe that's why there's no wknd discount.

Is the Superior room worth 50E more per night for Husband & I? Classic will be fine for teenagers.

Yes, the superior room is very nice and a little larger than the classic, which isn't all that bad. A great treat for the teenagers.

You may want to contact Iberian Traveler ([email protected]) to see if they can get you a better rate for your three-night stay. We've done a package with them and they where able to get us some decent rates at several hotels, including breakfast, that where well under the rack and Internet rates.

I just checked. Barcelona Selection.com is offering a rate of 193 euros for a classic and 241 for a superior at the H1898, but the final price will depend on your dates.

Thanks for the help Robert. I just punched in our travel dates on selection.com and unfortunately for June 7-10 their rates are the same as the hotel rates. Too bad.

So far my email inquiries with H1898 have been answered promptly. They seem very nice. I think we'll just book directly with them.

Just found this thread! I'm taking my 15 year old daughter to barcelona in march and am also looking at 1898 or neri. I'll splurge for 1898 if it will be better for her, but neri looks so charming, and quiet. Will it be too charming and quiet for her? She's going to want cafes, shopping, markets, but does also qppreciate quaint. Is neri too far away from Ramblas and (another shopping street I read about that I think starts with a P?) And which is safer if I want to let her skip out of the hotel for a stroll without me? (she's often been our morning bakery runner on other trips. she's loves this.)

Oh! and also, did I see reference to a football game? Wow why didn't I think of that - (because it's not season here!) Is there a site with info and schedules? I'll also be in Madrid.

Thanks!

Check out this web site. The season starts soon and runs through early June. We will either buy our tickets for the June 10th match through this site or the hotel offered to purchse tickets for us.
Our teenage boys (16 & 14) are really looking forward going to a game.

We found schedules for the teams through their offical websites. Then I googled 'FS Barcelona ticket sales'

I haven't booked with H1898 yet, but probably will. It's expensive but will be our splurge hotel for this European trip. The staff has been friendly and helpful so far. also responds quickly to my emails. We are all very excited to visit Barcelona. The city seems like a fun place for young people.

We are planning to do a Fat Bike Tire tour too. We've used their tour company in Paris and enjoyed the guides.

Thank you, suziem, I'm travelling in March and have figured out that there are no games during our stay (something to do with the National team competing... )I'm travelling with my 15 year old daughter and have also chosen the 1898 (with Robert's insistence, how could I stray?). They have been very responsive by both phone and email. We're looking forward to it, it will be a followup to a visit to my sister in Madrid. In fact I extended my stay in Madrid by a night in order to save enough there to splurge a little in barcelona.

Have fun,
Monica

1898 all the way. It is a wonderful hotel and a generally great experience. Check out their Bar Lobo downstairs, and stop in at Granja M. Viader (just 2 doors down on Xuclà St.) for a snack. . . drink the Mallorquin milk. To die for!

monb- Too bad there isn't a match during your stay. It should be a fun diversion from the usual travel sightseeing.

Thanks to all for the rec's for H1898. I just booked our rooms, 1 classic (250E) & 1 superior (300E). Whew, one more 'to do' ticked off the travel planning list.

Thanks Kenderina. I gather they don't set the exact date and time until closer to the match but generally are they day or evenings games? We were going to plan to take the night train from Barcelona to Paris after the game. It may end too late for that and we'd have to fly the next morning instead. Which would mean an extra night at the hotel. Any idea when they set the date/time for these things?

The time is set the days before the match because the television schedules rule that. But I find difficult you could make it to the train...the sooner they begin is at 5 or 6 PM and sometimes they begin a 10 PM. I won't risk with the train, is rather expensive to lose it

Looks like we'll have to plan to fly the next morning. Which is fine. The frustrating part is if they change the date to the 9th then we could take the train. We don't need to be in Paris until the 11th and we wanted to experience the Elipsos night train.

Oh well. Not meant to be on this trip. I imagine if we waited until just days before departure, both night train sleeper compartments and/or flights would be outrageously expensive.
