Hotel Neri in Barcelona

We have booked a couple of days at this hotel in November, i know that it is a reasonably new property, but one of you fodorites must of stayed there. I would be grateful for any feedback on it what so ever, good or bad.Thanking you in advance.

I just got back from my honeymoon and stayed at the Neri in Barcelona for one night. I absolutely loved it. I was also concerned as there is little info out there on this hotel. It is a "Rusticae" and "Inns of Spain" property so you can find info on those site. It is in an old palace, so it retains loads of old world charm, yet really sleek and modern decor and amenities. My room had a great sound system with customized mood music (there were even speakers in the balcony and bathroom), great mood lighting in the rooms, even a flat screen TV. Rooms were spacious, bathroom was ultra modern and clean, and my terrace was wonderful. This boutique property has great service - we were greeted with a glass of Cava and were given a "tour" of our room highlighting all of the amenities. The only downside is that it is on a pedestrian street so we had a bit of a hard time finding it, which was a pain if you have lots of luggage, which we did. Tell the taxi driver to drop you off at la plaza de la catedral. That is the most accessible place. Keep in mind it is in el Barrio Gotico - narrow, dark and winding streets. Can be a little dangerous if you get there at night, but you shouldn't have any problems.

I stayed at the Hotel Colon, accross from la catedral for 2 nights, and thought it was awful compared to my experience at Neri....I mean, really bad.

If you need restaurant recommendations in walking distance, I have two great ones I went to, so let me know and I will respond.

Magsc,
I'm really glad to hear you enjoyed the Hotel Neri; I remember our talking about it here. Thanks for the feedback. I'd love to know the restaurants nearby you enjoyed, when you have the time.

We really enjoyed El Pintor on c/Sant Honorat 7. This is very near the hotel Neri and we fell upon it by chance. It is very cozy, very warm lighting, beautiful interior and the food was very good. The service was actually quite friendly, which is a rarity in Catalunya, in my opinion. Overall a very good experience.

The other restaurant was Les Quatre Gats (4 Cats) also in very near walking distance to the hotel on c/Montsio 3. Picasso and his modernist friends used to frequent this old restaurant. From the outside it looks very small and modest but in the back there is a large and beautiful room that was packed even late on a Monday night. There was a VERY lively violinist and pianist playing the entire night - we left past midnight and they were still playing...the room has a viewing balcony all around it, and we sat on one of the tables up there which was kind of fun because you get to people watch. The food was also very good and service was decent as well.

Both restaurants are in the approx. $100 per couple range with a bottle of wine, appetizers, main course and dessert. Very average for a dinner in Spain.

My negative experience in Barcelona was 7Portes, which gets great reviews everywhere, including in this message board. I found it to be rather stuffy and overpriced not to mention that the service was terrible and the food very very mediocre. Perhaps we picked the wrong food - lots of raw seafood - it was one of their specials for the night. I would without a doubt skip this the next time around.
