leath,
Welcome to Fodor's!
There are many, many people here waiting to help you choose a hotel near Piazza San Marco.
A few clarification questions, if I might:
What is your nightly hotel budget?
How many people?
What do you consider "near"? 5 blocks? 10 blocks?
When are you going?

Hotel Dona Palace--also has WiFI if you bring your laptop. Very quiet at night and really just a few turns/street corners from St Mark's. Also had good reviews on TripAdvisor. I'd stay there again.

Chris, I think there might be a typo in the link you gave. It wouldn't open for me, but I made the word "locanda" and got this site:

We've stayed at the Wildner twice, once in November and again a week ago. Quite convenient to San Marco, very easy to find and get to. No elevator though. There are nicer (and much pricier) hotels in the area, such as the Danielli and Gabrielli.
I was a little concerned this last time about noise during high season, but the crowds faded away in the evenings; a few boat horns were what we noticed most. In the mornings it was somewhat amusing to sit out and enjoy a relaxed breakfast while watching all the tour groups get off the boats and follow their little flags around.

I second the vote for Antica Locanda Al Gambero. My husband and I stayed there in March in one of the canal view rooms with a balcony and it was the highlight of our trip. I still look at the webcam on the website almost every day!

We are staying at the Residence Corte Grimani in December. It is new & I think one block from San Marco. Tripadvisor has great reviews as well as posters here. It is a hotel, but each unit is an apartment w/a full kitchen & even has a washer/dryer. We are paying $369 US for 3 nights.

We stayed at the Locanda Barbarigo. It was very near the Santa Maria della Giglio vaporetto stop and a very short walk to either the Piazza San Marco or Rialto Bridge areas. We enjoyed our stay there very much. The only drawback was that they did not accept credit cards, so you had to pay in cash. Not a huge deal, but something to be aware of in advance.

Absolutely worth the extra 30. C'mon, its 30, not 100.
as i recall the shower did have a glass door or some kind of partition. but the bathroom was small, like most european hotels. i mean barely room for two people to stand in there together kind of small. i wouldnt let that get to you though. the location is the key. and it was clean.

Definitely worth the extra - seeing the gondolas coast by under our balcony was the highlight of our trip. Our shower was a normal tub/shower though. The bathroom was actually very luxurious, although tiny. I can't remember our room number but we were essentially right above the front desk.

Thank you cab. The Gambero just responded; told me they could not promise the only double they have with a balcony, but "for sure you will have room overlooking the canal." I just hope it's a view I can see without leaning over and falling out the window

You might also ask them about the room across from the computer room and next to the front desk. It also had a balcony but it seemed like they don't put people there often despite it having a room number on the door. It would be a bit louder since there is a tv in the computer room but depending on how much you want the balcony might be worth it.
One other suggestion in case you can't get the balcony room - you might want to request a lower floor. The front desk there is already on the second floor and the rooms start on the third floor and I believe go up to the fifth floor or so. I think you get a much better canal view from the lower floors since they are already pretty high up.
