hotel in Syros?

It looks like we will probably go to Syros after mykonos as a way to get to Santorini.

Any ideas for a nice low cost hotel or place to stay?

Thanks again!

WTnow, I have followed your efforts to avoid highspeed ferries with interest. Correct me if I am wrong, but are you really planning an overnight in Syros and a 10 hour ferry to avoid the 3 hr FlyingCat 4 ride from Mykonos to Santorini? Why don't you wait and see what the weather will be like before making your decision?

Last month I took the FlyingCat 3 from Paros to Naxos (okay, shorter trip) but the day was calm, and the ride so smooth I hardly knew the ship was moving.

Keep an eye on the weather forecasts, and if it will be windy, go ahead with your plan. But if the winds are light you will be much better off on the FlyingCat 4.

I believe they're travelling with an RV so they need a car ferry. Or have you parked it someplace temporarily, WTnow?

Heimdall,

Ha ha, yes I suppose it does sound crazy, but there is some reason behind my madness.

For one I do not have a time limit and am traveling by whim, so my approach is much different than someone who has a week or two and every minute counts.

Syros looks interesting so why not check it out if it also helps me avoid the flying cat? I see it as an opportunity, not a problem really.

Your suggestion is logical, but I had a really bad experience on the flying Cat on a ride from Satorini to Naxos ( we were headed to Amorgas.

We have loved most of our ferry rides..and we have taken a ton, but just HATED that ship.

It felt like a crowded airplain and was bouncing all over the place. Yuk. We ended up never leaving port on this doomed ferry to no where and I was ever so glad to get off it and get my money back.

My poor friends were stuck with trying to get to Mykonos eventually as there was a turbo problem. They were sitting for hours and hours when we left them.

THEN I read countless stories of people getting sick on it in rough seas...2/3rds of the people on board puking thier guts out.

Not a pretty picture that I want to chance. It may get rough with a big ferry as well, but I trust those who say it is more stable and also think it really helps to get to fresh air and where one can see the horizon.

So long story short, I would rather take a big ferry, even the gawdawful GA ferries that are ancient and ugly.

I love having a cabin and think sleeping thru a good portion thru a long ferry ride is nice ( as well as time to write my blog and watch a dvd).

So we will skip Syros at this point as we have booked a large over night ferry from Mykonos to Santorini.

But Thanks cristine27 for the links as we might use it at a different time.

Does it make a little more sense now

Heimdall?

My child got seasick on the gulet in Turkey in rough seas and I don't want to go thru that again especially if we all got sick at the same time.

For us the time is not a big deal and I like the ultimate slow travel aspect of big ferries. There is something romantic about wind in ones hair and arriving and leaving ports in this traditional way.

Every big ship has been mostly empty and I like that. The flying cat was crowded and crunched like a miserable plane ride only scarier and rockier.

Not a comfy spot for freedom lovers like my child and myself.

I took a fast ferry from Rhodes to Turkey but it was quite nice and big, so no problem. The fast ferry from Turkey to Samos was smaller and not as nice but not as bad as the flyingcat.

I suppose if I was desperate I would take it on a smooth day and pray it would be okay as I know many are, but I like my little quirk of looking for a big one.

Maybe it suits my sensibilities like an ancient authentic village does compared to could-be-anywhere concrete hi rise.

Heck I am even looking forward to the day when we can do some freighter travel around the world as I hear it is "old world" divine. ( A child must be 11). I like the advantages of slow and doing things differently.

BTW, I really appreciate your great comments on this forum!!

Fair enough, WTnow. It would be a boring world if we all had the same tastes. To me ferries are a necessary evil to get to the islands - the shorter journey time the better.

Flying is better yet - 45 minutes from Athens to Paros is my ideal. Sadly there aren't many inter-island flights, but Sky Express, and the new AirSea Lines (I believe), do a Mykonos - Santorini flight.

You seem to have had a great holiday. How wonderful to not be governed by a strict timetable.
