Hotel in Chartres?
After arriving in Paris and renting a car, we'll spend our first night in in Chartres. I was planning on BW Le Grand Monarque, but some of the reviews have me a bit concerned. Anyone been there lately? Or any other suggestions? Thanks, annieladd

Yes, it seems as though the Grand Monarque is the best choice. It's ranked #1 at Trip Advisor for Chartres' hotels. There are only two comments and neither one gives the hotel excellent marks. But it's just for one night, right? I'd book it if I were you given the other hotel choices that either have zero comments or were rated worse than the Grand Monarque.

We met friends in Chartres, and they stayed in the IBIS. They seemed quite satisfied with it. I imagine that it's a little newer than Le Grand Monarque, which is well rated by Fodor's and Frommer, but the people who stayed there seemed to think it was in need of refurbishment. You might check out the Guides de Charme. There are photos of Le Grand Monarque on there, and it looks very nice. There's also another hotel, a 4 star listed.

And how about this on Special Places to Stay. Very simple but seems interesting:

It has been a couple of years now. We stayed at the Ibis, as they were the only one capable of internet booking at the time. We are nine hours time zone whys away. It was okay but not a treat.
We trained from Paris and picked up our car in Chartres.

We found Jehan de Beauce by accident a few years ago. It is walking distance to the train station and a place where many French businessmen stay. rooms are plain but very clean with private bathrooms. It is very inexpensive and location is good and is within walking distance of Hertz rentals. Breakfast not included but offered at a very reasonable price. Definitely would stay there again.
