What's "decent". We stayed in the easyHotel whose room was as large if not larger than some 2 star French hotels and was spotless. But it had no windows and the en-suite bathroom was encased in plexiglass with absolutely no aural privacy from the other person in the room.

We stayed in the Hotel au Violon in Basel in 2003, very nice mid-priced and on the Alstadt. I think we had a category B room, modern shower, wooden floors, looked out over the Alstadt. We didn't eat in the restaurant but it was busy both nights we were there.

We stayed at the Hotel Schweizerhof in Basel and really liked it -

It was reasonably priced, room rates vary depending on the room type. Good location close to the train station and trams and a short walk into the centre of the city. Service was prompt and helpful. We also got a free transport pass for the central Basel area but I think all hotels in Basel may offer that.
