Hotel Gerberhaus
To start our Germany/Austria/Switzerland honeymoon, we are driving from Frankfurt to Rothenburg. We've booked our first night at Hotel Gerberhaus; it's recommended by Rick Steves and we've found a few favorable reviews on the net. Could I get some commenets from anyone who has stayed here before? Also, should we really be planning for two nights here? That would give as almost two days to spend.

One other question for those who have made the drive from the Frankfurt airport to Rothenbug: which is the best way to go? I've done some preliminary research and it looks like there are several ways to go; judging by the maps we've looked at it can't be that long of a ride...

Thanks in advance for any imput!!

W: We stayed at the Gerberhaus and liked it very much. Original, 16th century building, nicely decorated rooms, good location, moderately priced, clean and freindly staff. They have a washer and dryer available to guests. Sit on the patio and sip some wine while your laundry is in process. It was mid-trip for us, so, really came in handy.
Stay two nights and run down to Dinkelsbuhl for a few hours. Miniature Rothenburg with fewer tourists. Really charming. Do it during the mid-day when Rothenburg is very crowded. Mornings and evenings in Rothenburg are fantastic.
From Frankfurt, take the road marked "Romantishe Strasse" (Romantic Road), not the autobahn. Many little villages and pretty countryside along the way. If you have time, stop at Wurzburg to see the Prince Bishop's Residence, the Baroque Chapel, Hofkirche, and the gardens. This is Franconia's Versailles. Great area. Have a wondeful honeymoon.
Absolutely visit Wurzburg, a vastly underated city IMO. It's setting in the river valley surrounded by vineyards is gorgeous. Ditto on the Residence. Do not pass it up. It has the largest open, frescoed staircase in Europe. We spent a half day in the Residence with our jaws open. The Marienburg fortress above the city is fantastic too. And for a diversion, the lovely walled village of Iphofen is nearby. Beware of driving in the inner city, it was murderous when the university was in session. And stay on the Romantic road, take your time and be an adventurer. Our best moments are when we intentionally get lost there.
