Hotel Excelsior Venice Lido
Has anyone even stayed there? If so:
1. Are the shuttle rides to Venice that are provided complimentary of the hotel?
2.How long does it take to get to St.Mark's Square?
3. What is the last time the shuttle returns and goes to the mainland.

I stayed there about 15 years ago and I would NOT recommend it at all. You are much better off trying to get closer to St. Marks Sq. if sight seeing is what you want to do. If you want to sun then Lido would be good. I remember the boat rides as long. There is a tragetto from Lido to St. Marks but it is not complimentary. It would not be my pick but a lot can change in 15 years. It still is out of the way.

The Excelsior hotel provides a regular complimentary boat shuttle from the Lido to San Marco and/or San Zaccharia (next to the Europa & Regina hotels, as well as the Gritti and Danieli hotels).
I think there is a boat every half an hour until 11.30 at night.
Time for the trip is around 15/20 mn.
They also feature a shuttle from and to Venice airport, but this one is a paying one.

I stayed there for a meeting a couple of years ago. Can't comment on the frequency of the shuttle since we got a couple of private ones for our group (about 50) to use whenever we wanted. It took about 15 minutes to get to San Marco.
The hotel is very elegant but the location is IMHO the pits for tourists. I much prefer to stay centrally so I can just step out into the heart of the city. Why waste 30 minutes a day minimum (assuming you don;t go back to relax and change for dinner) just sitting in a boat rather than seeing Venice?

We have a reservation at another hotel in Venice (Hotel American) but since I heard the Excelsior is so beautiful the shuttle to the heart of the city isn't that bad. We plan to go into the city during the day and then come back to the hotel, relax, shower and then go back to the hotel...Am I being silly for trading luxury with convenience?

We stayed at the Europa Regina a couple of years back, can't be beat, but probably more expensive than the Excelsior.
We visited Lido, and it has a completely different feel from Venice, more like a beach resort. If at all possible, stay in the heart of Venice, but if the trade-off is staying at a dump, than I guess Lido would be my choice.
If you are only staying 2 or 3 days it may be worth the extra dough for a good property near St. Marks Square. Venice is worth every cent you spend, there's no place like it.

Danak - You do not have to trade luxury for convenience. There are no shortages of delux hotels near St. Marks Sq. My favorite is the Danieli, but there are so many more. The Gritti is also another favorite. You can have both...convenience and luxury

Danak: $80 IS a great rate, you will only get a dump in Venice for that price. When are you going? Sounds like off-season. Hotels on Lido must have lots of availability between November and March. For $80, I'd stick with Lido, we paid $400 per night at the Europa Regina in May of 2001.

If you plan to spend a lot of time at the hotel and luxury is of great importanct to you, I would say Excelsior. If you just want good accommadations and to experience every moment of your time in Venice proper, I would say the American, if it has good reviews. It makes it very hard to go back to your hotel if you have forgotten something, etc., if you are on Lido. I didn't find anything charming about Lido. I have been to Venice many times, and every time I go, I am more sure that staying on the island is the best. I had to stay in Mestre one time for other reasons, and I did not like having that short train ride, especially at night when I wanted to sit in San Marco as long as possible.
