Has anyone done this or know of a good place to do it? I'd like to go take a ride to the famous lavender fields in Provence in July ... so far, an internet search has turned up a week-long ride and also a day trip out of Avignon that turned up unbookable. I emailed the French tourism office and they sent me links, but most of those links turned out to be for equestrian schools rather than trail-riding places. I googled the forums here and at tripadvisor and also came up blank. Surely someone else out there has longed to gallop through fields of lavender (is it just me?)

If you google promenade à cheval you get a bazillion hits.

That said, I can't imagine anyone allowing galloping horses in their fields - of lavender or otherwise.

Um - the farmers aren't going to let a whole pack of horses go galumphng through their very valuable lavender fields (even if there is a public stable nearby). Trail rides are on trails - not farmers' private property.

Those lavender fields are farms and businesses and generally hourly horse rentals for casual riders wouldn't be set up next to them. I've never seen one, anyway, but there might be one somewhere. It wouldn't be a very desirable neighbor. All the places I've seen in France like that are not for hourly riders who are tourists, they are for people who board horses there or take regular lessons or something.

I ride a bit myself, or used to, and took lessons and they don't have that many of those left where I live any more, either. Lots of insurance issues and it isn't that profitable.

296vancouver - if the websites are all in French then most likely the location operates only in French and if you do not communicate in French then I am not sure you would want to take a trail ride with people with whom you cannot communicate.

Still - there are a good number of places in France to ride where English is spoken.
