@nytraveler, it looks as though youre lucky enough to travel in a bit more of luxury than us. good for you! we arent as worried about the AC. i grew up without it (for the most part) and survived an entire summer in Mexico City once and my fiance has a nice middleastern background to weather the heat. who knows, we may be singing a different tune when we return!!
@josele, we love cheap restaurants and plastic chairs as well and we will definitely be hitting the Flying Scotsman! ha.
@Egbert, yes this is slightly more confusing. but im thankful for all of the perspectives an info, it will really help us to navigate our trip!!
well, weve since booked our flights- two direct flights from nyc into malaga, so it looks like we have sealed our fate. malaga is the winner!
were hoping with alittle patience, two free spirits, and some alcohol we can happily explore our way through the southern cities and towns. im excited to see what weve gotten ourselves into!!! less than two months until were newlyweds~

Congratulations ahead of time. You'll have a great trip. Andalucia is my favorite place to visit in the world. (The Hawaiian islands are a close second). I agree that a lot of the area around Malaga is a tourist hell hole but Malaga itself is a great city full of its own special, classy Andalucian culture.

To put you in a Málaga mood, here is fabolous flamenco singer Enrique Morente singing "Adiós, Málaga" from his latest album "Pablo de Málaga". In tribute to and with material from Málaga-born Pablo Picasso. I saw his perhaps now even more famous daughter Estrella singing her fathers song in Málaga in november. The malagueños' reception was huge.

The poet Federico García Lorca by the way held Málaga as his favourite city for being so joyful and easy-going.

Agree that in midsummer the Atlantic coast of Spain has much better weather and many of the tourists you run into will be Spanish. To stay in areas without tourists you would have to go very far out of the major cities - into countryside with perhaps not a lot to do, no AC , very hot weather. Not what I would do.
San Sebastian is charming, there is a lot to do, but it is a traditional summer resort in the european style. (Frankly - in July, finding a place not packed with tourists - of many nationalities - will not be easy in most countries.)
