Honeymoon: Positano to Rome - Should we spend a few hours in Naples en route?

We leave for our honeymoon in about 10 days. We flew into Rome and head via private car to the Amalfi Coast for a few days. First stop Postitano.

Our next stop will be Rome. We are going to have taxi take us to the Napoli train station where we'll head to Rome. We are wondering if it would be worth while to check our baggage at the train station and spend a few hours walking around Naples, maybe have a bit of this pizza I have heard wonderful things about. Does anyone think this would be worthwhile? Too rushed? We don't want to be on a schedule but also want to arrive in Rome at a reasonable hour. Also, if it is worthwhile to spend a few hours is there a restaurant we shouldn't miss?

Thank you,
Robyn

Hi Robyn,

Do you have any interest in Pompeii? It would be my top recommendation!

I would recommend Pompeii as well. We went from Positano last Fall via taxi to Pompeii, checked our luggage there at the site, toured Pompeii, then grabbed the train from Pompeii to Naples. At Naples we grabbed our train to Rome. Very easy. Have a great taxi/limo service if you need one.
Loved Positano! Have a great time!

For a couple of hours I would rather suggest Herculaneum, plus it is closer to Naples.

Hi H,

>We flew [sic] into Rome and head via private car to the Amalfi Coast...<

I realize it's your honeymoon, but you can save a lot by taking the train from Rome TE to Naples and hiring a limo to take you to Positano for about 90E.

I also suggest having your limo driver take you to Pompeii or Herculaneum on the way to the Naples train station.

A cab will be very expensive.

forget naples. Its not terribly romantic or interesting.
Actually the most disapointing part of my italian honeymoon.
Go to pompeii or herculaneum.

Thank you for your advice- I think you had mentioned that once before. We know this is an area that is going to cost us a bit more but after the long flight we are just looking forward to having a car waiting for us upon arrival. Since we are leaving in about a week to cancel on our driver would probably cost us too. I know the taxi costs about 90E from Positano back to the Naples train station. Hopefully we'll get to see some of Naples before heading to Rome.
Thank you again,
Robyn

Are people going to yell at me for saying I have no interest in going to Pompeii. I am just being honest. I thought maybe walking around and grabbing some delicious pizza would be worthwhile. I am sure we'll decide upon arrival if we should stay or head directly to Rome.

Thank you,
Robyn

Hi again Robyn,

I did have some fabulous pizza in Naples. I only stayed over 1 night and would have liked a second. I was there mainly to see the Archeological Museum.

I kind of think that if you are not interested in seeing Pompeii or the museum, you might enjoy your walking around in Rome more.

Buon viaggio!

PS- the best adice I can give you is:

When in Italy, try lots of things you "think" you don't have an interest in - sites, food, art, whatever! You don't have to commit to spending an entire day there. If you have even the slightest open mind, you will be pleasantly surprised and even amazed.

I 100% agree and things that you wouldn't normally like you appreciate and enjoy!

Thank you,

we spent 2 years ago time in amalfi coast and from rome to positano we did stop in pompeii the company we used charged us euros 400,00 including 2 hrs stop in pompeii
they where really good and we first booked with our travel agent who was charging us 550,00
so a friend of ours who's a travel agent ha... gave us the company she uses www.italycarservice.it
and we got to see so much spending just under 900,00 e we did a tour of the cost and returned back to the rail station.

Naples isn't quite honeymoon material. It's more interesting than romantic. I enjoyed it very much, but I also thought Pompeii was one of the most amazing places I've ever been. However, since we're only taking about a few hours, and teh pizza really is THAT good, I would go grab a pizza. Personally, if I was that close to Naples, and it were in any way humanly possible, I'd definitely make time for neapolitan pizza. In fact, I may go out of my way to get one. But then, I'm hugely enthusiastic about food.
