honeymoon in italy and croatia

Hi all,

My fiancé and I are planning to have our honeymoon in Croatia and Italy for 3 weeks in August or September of 2016. I'm hoping to get insight on what cities to visit and for how many days in each country. We would like to spend 5 days in Croatia, preferably Zagreb since it's close to the Plitvice National Park and fly out to Italy. We really want to visit the Amalfi coast, Rome, and Florence. Can someone please help me with an itinerary?? Any help would be truly appreciated. Thanks!!

So, 3 weeks equals 21 days. Assuming you eliminate 2 days for getting to/from Croatia/Italy, that leaves you with 19 days. You want to spend 5 days in Croatia, which leaves you 14 days for Italy.

You could do a (nearly) equal division of your days, so you have 5 days in Rome, 4 days in Florence and 4 days on the Amalfi Coast. But how you divide your days should really depend on what you want to see/do in each location. So you and your fiance should sit down with a couple of guidebooks and decide on your priorities and what you want to see in each destination. Once you have that list, it should be clearer how your days should be divided.

FWIW, I would end your trip on the Amalfi Coast. The gorgeous scenery and laid-back atmosphere will be a great antidote to the busy cities of Rome and Florence and a great cap to your honeymoon.

whoops - that should be 5 days in Rome, 4 days in Florence and 5 days on the AC.

Keep in mind that each time you change locations, you lose up to a half-day in transit: have breakfast, pack, check out of hotel, get to train station, find and wait for train, train ride, get from train station to hotel, check into hotel, drop bags, freshen up, now it is nearly lunch time.

If you do the trip per above you would want to fly home from Naples - rather than waste a day having to make your way back to Rome to get a flight home.

Good point NYT - flying "multi-city" or "open-jaw" is the best way to go, to avoid back-tracking.

How are you traveling between Croatia and Italy?

I went to Croatia last year and I'm going to Italy day after tomorrow. We landed in Rijeka (actuall in Krk island), spent a night there and then went to discover Istria. For me, Rijeka and Opatija were the cities I fled as quickly as I could. Pula was a bit dissapointment to me. But I absolutely loved Rovinj, it was the highlight of that trip! I took one day trip to Venice from Porec, but since the fast boat season ends by the time of 10th September or so and you didn't say anything about going to Venice, I think that's not an option for you. One of my friends took a night ferry from Split to Ancona, but if it would be me, maybe I'll spend few hours in Split to do some sightseeing and then go to the ferry, but not more.

I basically went to all Croatia's top places and sights, exept Zagreb, so I have nothing to say about that city. But for me, Split was absoultely the place to avoid. Zagreb seemed nice and Dubrovnik was a little of dissapointment (maybe it was just bad weather and lots of cruise tourist in town). I do suggest you to take all day for Plitvica. I think we spent there 6-8 hours, but we did got lost and wandered in uninhibited places. I also strongly advise you to wear sandals, because in September some of the paths may be under water and you wouldn't fancy to wear wet shoes all day (or take them off.. little rocks underneath your feet are so painful!)
