Hi - Thanks for the help...a bit more information about us: we're a couple in our late 20s; we are very intersted in history/culture, eating/drinking, appreciating local customs, and I think for our Honeymoon more relaxing than we usually would like on our travels; we like to explore on our own, but of course are willing to use a guide where necessary. I would like to go someplace where it is warm, at least for some of the time; warm wnough to lay out by a pool or beach and relax; we're city people, we like to walk everywhere, or take a taxi; we would like to stay under 200/night, but are willing to pay more if the accomodations are worth it, and maybe cut back on a hotel in another leg of the trip; we aren't very comfortable flying in small planes (i.e. flights around the islands); what types of planes do you usually fly?; but that ferry to Santorini (7.5) hours just seems so long!

Caramia79,

Most of the planes that we flew between the islands last year held about 50 or more people. However, I think if you don't like flying much, you might be better off buying a pack of cards, some books, and taking that long ferry ride to Santorini. Our flight was extremely turbulent due to heavy winds from Mykonos to Athens, which I understand is not all that unusual for July in the islands. In fact, none of the other passengers (except us) looked all that worried!

Caramia, I'm still unclear as to how long you plan on being in Greece...do I understand that you want to go to Athens, Santorini, and then someplace else?

Anyway, Crete sounds like it would be perfect for your honeymoon, it will be warm and lovely in early October. Since Crete is such a large island, you will find many and diverse things to do there. Fabulous food, great natural beauty, and perfect beaches (which won't be crowded at that time of year).

The ancient history of Crete is very interesting. If you go to Crete, you should go to Knossos - I would recommend hiring a guide for Knossos to better appreciate it. For natural beauty, the Samaria gorge is definitely worth the trip.

On Crete, I prefer staying in Chania (with Rethymnon as a close second). We have stayed at the Casa Delfino in Chania, and liked it very much, and it is within your price range.

My in-laws stayed at Palazzo di Pietro in Chania and they highly recommended it. It is more reasonably priced than the Casa Delfino.

Although it is possible to experience Crete without a vehicle, we prefer to rent a car there as it allows us to enjoy the diversity that Crete provides.

As for planes between Athens and Santorini, they are not small planes in the sense I use that term. They are regular passenger jets -- just not very big ones! Like the smaller commuter airlines use in the US.

Forget Greece and go to Venice.

Hi Eleni - thanks for the response - well, we are unsure how long we will stay in Greece; long enough to stay in Athens for a couple of days; Santorini for a few days, and per your suggeston, Crete.
Okay - so, the planes would be "small commuter" jets; i think I know what you mean, I have flown those between Boston and NY - like a shuttle?
I will check out those hotels you suggested - thank you.

Yes, like the shuttle.
I have friends who just got back from Chania, and they stayed at Casa Leone and liked it very much. You might want to check that one out too.

If it helps at all, I highly recommend Palazzo di Pietro. We stayed there last July for four nights in one of the very nicely decorated two-room suites. The young owner and her family have lovingly restored every inch of the hotel. It's very small- only about nine rooms, I think- so if you're interested, I'd e-mail or phone soon.
