St. Andrews or Crail are your best choices. Personally I'd not stay in Anstruther. I think janisj has a place in Crail that she recommends and I'm sure that there are several good choices in St. Andrews.

I forgot to mention that while I'd not stay in Anstruther, there is a good restaurant there called The Cellar.

I'd prefer Crail myself, but I always have a car. If I was limited to public transport - I might stay in St Andrews simply because it is sort of a hub w/ bus routes to various parts of Fife and is closer to the train station in Leuchars.

What is your budget? Here is the place I've used several times in Crail. It isn't on the harbor, but it is comfy, has good food, and quite reasonable rates. http://www.caipliehouse.com/

Anstruther has the really good Cellar historytraveler mentioned plus a couple of other good places to eat, and the Scottish fisheries museum.

Definitely stay in St Andrews if you don't have a car. Crail, Anstruther etc are very small places and will be pretty isolated over CHristmas if you don't have your own transport.

I would pick St Andrews. There's more to see an do there and it's easier to get to other areas from there.

I'll third (or whatever) The Cellar restaurant.

I'd stay in St Andrews for the public transport options alone.

I wouldn't want to stay in any of them, in the middle of winter, without a car. What exactly are you planning to do with your time ? Bear in mind the short days - it's only light from c.8.30 to c.3.30 at present.

St Andrews is the best of a bad job but do you realise its railway station isn't even in the town but a few miles away via connecting bus ?
