Help with Split and where else?

We are stopping in Split on a cruise from 8:00am until 5:00p.m. Assuming we're off the ship right at 8, can we get to Trogir or anywhere close by within an hour, spend a few hours and be back in Split to look around the Palace and market? How can we do it, ferry, taxi, bus? And if we can't get to Trogir, is there anywhere close by that we can see and still have the 3 or so hours in Split? I know I've read that except for the Palace complex, Split is not as gorgeous as some of the other towns and islands in Croatia. I'm sure that is a subjective matter of taste, but everyone says Trogir is really beautiful. Thanks in advance.

there are buses to Trogir from Split ( don't know the timetable)
Split is a great place. It is a big city but the area near the sea ("riva" }is very nice.
Also, there is mount Marian ( you can take a taxi to the top), lovely parks and vistas.
Trogir is charming but very small, a few hours was enough for us.
We liked Split very much and are giong back next year.

I agree with what nbujic said. Trogir is about a 30 minute plus drive from Split and worth a few hours. Taxis and buses next to the port in Split.
Actually found Split more to my liking.

As nbujic said, the best way to reach Trogir is by bus. It takes about 30 minutes and buses leave every half-hour or hour--you can find schedules at <http://www.ak-split.hr/index.html>. The intercity bus station is right by the port , which should be convenient for you, but you probably won't make it in time for the 8 am bus and when things are busy, you might need to wait an hour for a bus with space.

When you return from Trogir, the bus may drop you at the city (instead of intercity) bus terminal--a 10 minute walk through the city back down to the port.

I stayed in Trogir last year and it was one of my favorite places on the Dalmatian coast. That being said, if you want to spend 3 hours in Split, you would want to leave Trogir by 1. As my guess would be that you wouldn't arrive in Trogir much earlier than 10, I wonder if it is worth all the hassle of the transfers for 3 hours in Trogir--which is a wonderful place to have a leisurely lunch that you probably won't have time to enjoy.

Split isn't as picturesque as Trogir, but Diocletian's Palace is quite impressive and I would say the city has a good feel to it. You might want to visit other things in Split, such as the Archaeological Museum, Kastelet, and Marjan Hill. Or if you want to venture out of town, the ruins of Solin are outside town on the way to Trogir--I'm not sure about the transport connections as I didn't get the chance to visit it, but it was closer to Split than Trogir.

You can get to Trogir by long-distance bus or by the local buses.
The long-distance buses go from the big bus station by the harbour and are heading to Zadar and beyond. They will drop passengers off in Trogir.
The local buses go from a bus station about ten minutes' walk inland from the port in Split. They terminate in Trogir and run every twenty minutes, I think, but are slower. They are more convenient for coming back from Trogir because they start their journey there, so you can get a seat (the long distance buses may be full when they pass through Trogir).
Trogir is very small and the old town is close to the bus stops.
