I thought I could walk from termini to Colosseum but now I see it makes sense to save our energy and take the the metro. Taxi idea is out. The cruise transportation would cost us $310 more than the train and wouldn't give us any longer in Rome. I have booked the second from last train so if something were to go wrong we still have another option. I'm thinking after we are spent touring the Palatine, Colosseum, Underground and Forum we will taxi it to Trevi Fountain for a drink and people watching. I'll have the Ipods charged!

why not spend the morning at st. Peter's [touring the Basilica, going up the Dome] then get the metro/taxi to the colosseum for your tour. [you should have time for an early lunch on this schedule].
afterwards, get the metro to Spagna, see the spanish steps, trevi, piazza navona etc, for as long as you like/have time for.
you could also explore the route of the HOHO buses.

I would LOVE to see the Basilica but we are so limited on time. Here is what I have: arriving at Termini at 9:45, metro to Colosseum. Tour as much of the Forum, Colosseum and Palatine with a quick lunch? before our 1pm tour of the underground which lasts 90 min. That leaves us 2 hr and 15 min before we have to catch our train back. My kids love to travel and this is the first cruise (maybe last) I'm afraid to cram too much in one day and turn them off. Good reason to return, right!?
