HELP with itinerary for the Cote D'Azur
Flying out on 21/08 from UK to Nice.Want to go to Cannes,St.Tropez and Monaco.Will be based in Nice and are staying for 4 nights( five days).Any suggestions on clubs,bars resturants(esp ones you may have found which were not mentioned in any guide book) places of interest,museums etc.Should we check out other destinations in this area.Many thanks.

Hi Serpico. If you like live music, check out the Thor Pub on the south side of the Cours Saleya in Vieux Nice. We saw a French rock band there and, although they did all covers with no originals, they were very good. One caveat (in case you don't smoke): it's VERY smoky.

We really enjoyed the Villa Kerylos (museum) in Cap Ferrat, between Nice and Monaco (if I'm remembering correctly). It was right on the water, just beautiful and definitely a "museum" you won't come across anywhere else. The house is a replica of a Greek villa. My, what the rich can do with money!

About six miles East of Nice:
La Chaumiere, 383 blvd de L'Observatoire. Phone in France is: 93-01-77-68. It's closed Sundays. This is one of the best restaurants we've ever been to-- just call to make sure it's still around, since we last dined there two years ago. It's a typical Provencal-style restaurant, charming and small. Dinner is beef, chicken, or veal grilled in the main dining room's fireplace. Appetizers are fresh glistening vegetables from the restaurant's garden brought to your table in a huge straw basket. The tapas and vegetable dips are homemade. Desserts are to die for. Need I say more? Two years ago, dinner for two with a bottle of the house red, was about $225, and worth every penny. Make sure you call as far ahead as is possible, and reconfirm when you get to Nice, or they will cancel you.
I also highly recommend a restaurant that IS in every guidebook- L'Colombe d'or in St. Paul de Vence. Exceptional food served on the stone terrace of a garden overlooking the valley of St. Paul. Make sure if you go to visit the main house afterwards, since it is home to artworks by Picasso and other famous artists who used to pay for their food and stay with paintings.
If you enjoy excellent seafood, a trip to St. Jean Cap de Ferret might be in order. Try the mussels at LE SLOOP down at the harbor, which is also a lively area full of art galleries, etc. Then you can take a good walk after lunch along the cliffside promenade that hugs the sea.

For a place of interest, if you like Roman ruins, check out the Trophee des Alpes in La Turbie, a village in the hills above Monaco. Great view down into Monaco from the grounds of the Trophee.
Also, between Nice & Monaco, there's Eze Village, a very picturesque perched village. If you go, try to visit early or late in the day when there is not the crush of tourists.
