Help with Itinerary bt. Venice and Rome

My husband and I will be in Italy the last three weeks of May--the first six nights in Venice and the last seven nights in Rome. We'd love some input on where to spend the 10 nights in between. (We have previously spent time in Venice, San Terenzo, Florence and Orvieto.)

Since we travel slowly, we're thinking in terms of two stops with four to six nights in each--relatively small communities that we could travel out from. We were wondering about staying somewhere on the East coast south of Venice and then inland on the way to Rome, but are open to suggestions. Any recommendations for accommodation (small B&Bs preferred) would also be welcome.

We'd rather not drive but realize it may be necessary for part of the time.

We'd really appreciate your thoughts!

You might enjoy Rimini. In May t will be pre-beach season, so yoou might get good deals on hotels. Plus a few different train lines intersect at Rimini, so from there you could make dat trips to Bologna, Ravenna, San Marino, Pesaro, Ferrara, Forli, Cesena . . .

I love Perugia which is a vibrant university town with excellent Art Galleries. Good centre for touring- easy train journeys to Cortona, Assisi, Spoleto and other Umbrian wonders.

I second Perguia as another good choice--also good bus access to nearby towns like Gubbio.
