help with italy trip
hi everyone,
my husband and i are going to italy from november 12-19. we only have 7 days, and i would like to get your advice. we are going to from milan to rome via train, for about 2-3 days. then we would like to go to florence, tuscany and emilia-rommania. does anyone know of decent pensiones or less expensive hotels to stay in these areas (rome, tuscany, emilia)? any suggestions on how to spend those 4 days (which cities)? we are hoping to only travel by train.
thank you!

Hi.
Where do you live? If you live in the U.S. you will consume a day just getting there. Is this open jaw? Must you return from your arrival city? The day of your return is probably not available for tourism.
If you arrive on the morning of the 13th you will need a restful day just to get your bearings. This leaves you with five full days. The train to Rome takes several hours.
Your time is short. May I suggest that you limit yourself to two cities? Rome and Venice? Milan and Florence?
You can do a lot by train but I encourage you to rethink your timetable. Everything takes longer than you think it will.
Good luck.

thank you all for the input so far!
we are going to be in italy before the 12th for a conference, so the 12th starts our vacation time. we definitely have to return to milan to fly back to US. we are planning to return to milan and stay near the airport the night before our flight home.
i think we will focus on rome & florence/tuscany. any nice, but inexpensive hotels in rome and florence? what is a good place to stay that is near florence, yet more centrally based in tuscany?

In Rome, you might consider the Instituto Santo Guliano (I may have butchered the name). It is an accomodation run by the Catholic Church. The location is about 100 ft off of Piazza Navona. We stayed there for four nights. The rooms was less than $100 per night.

And if you are planning to visit any museums in Florence, try to reserve your tickets a week in advance. (especially if you are planning to visit Uffizi) It will save you a lot of waiting time. I make my reservations too late - 2 days before my trip, so I had to wait for almost 4 hours to get into the museum. Have fun in Italy. People are very friendly

thank you all for your help so far!
i found the eurocheapo site to be difficult--i would enter dates to check hotels, and it would find some, but then in the end, they were not available! maybe it is a safari problem.
still looking for a place in rome!

Carlita,
In Florence, try La Residenza del Pronscolo:
http://www.proconsolo.com/index_eng.asp
It is a bit over your price range.
Or, Casa Santo Nome di Gesu
http://www.fmmfirenze.it/
Clean, very affordable, in the Oltrarno. Right in your price range.
In Rome, I would go to Venere.com, Go to the Rome page, enter your dates and search by price range.$100 a night is tough in both cities...

And here is a thread active right now that has a great suggestion for a low-cost hotel in Rome. The location is perfect.

Hi Carlita,
In florence I can highly recommend the B&B Peterson. We stayed there for 11 nights.

ira and faredolce, thank you so much for the suggestions. i have already requested availability for several places. let's hope they are open! thanks to everyone for keeping my requests going for answers!
new question: as we have to get back to milan after florence, is there one more city you would suggest? bologna, reggio emilia, modena or parma? we are food lovers! any suggested hotels there?
this has been extremely helpful, i appreciate everyone's comments!
