Help With Italian Lakes Itinerary

We want to spend the last week of September in the Italian Lakes region. Our thought is to base ourselves in 1 town, or possibly 2 for day explorations. We will fly in and out of Milan and rent a car. Never having been to this part of Italy before, I would appreciate suggestions.

We really like staying in Stresa, and driving to Como and Lugano for day trips. On Lake Maggiore there are the Borremeo islands, which are worth a day in themselves. May people prefer Lake Como and Bellagio/Menaggio, but I think the rugged beauty of Lake Maggiore suits us better. There is also a train that goes to several of the locations; I can't remember the name of it at this time. We are going to be in Arona (just south of Stresa) during the last week of May and the first week of June; this will be our third trip to the area and we love to go there just to relax.
