Help with Hotels in Granada and Madrid
Friends,
I am working on the final two hotels of a four-hotel, two week trip to Spain. So far, we have booked Casa de las Juderias for 3 nights in Madrid and the Parador in Ronda for 4 nights (plan to do a bunch of day excursions from Ronda). I now need to work on acommodations in Granada (two nights) and Madrid (final three nights). We generally like charming and interesting places...comfortable, but reasonably priced. Can anyone offer suggestions for Granada (already tried the Parador at Alhambra, it's booked) and Madrid? Thanks so much! Carma

For Granada, I will suggest Casa del Aljarife (www.granadainfo.com/most). It's a small pension in Albaicin. We were there in 1999 and loved it. We had a large room with a view on Alhambra !

Carma,
If you prefer the Alhambra hill, there's the 4 star Alhambra Palace with its extravagant Neo-Moorish architecture (not small but not impersonal either), beautiful views from the back rooms and nice service, but the rates have crept up for the high season, above 150 (but check at www.hotelalambrapalace.com or the discount hotel internet sites).
The small, modest but cute option, the little 1 star family run Hotel America is probably fully booked.
We've tried the Carmen de Santa Ines in the Albaicin, and it didn't work well for us (lots of climbing, shabby chic and difficult access with a car-we're too old and less adventurous these days, I guess!), but... there's the new Casa del Capitel Nazari, as another Albaicin-area option, but I haven't seen it. It received a nice review here, and I think it's not so far deep into the Albaicin and closer to the Plaza Nueva (that square to me, is a kind of hippy, new age hangout)

Or the new, plush AC Palacio de Santa Paula, more expensive but really comfy rooms, says a reviewer here, and it's down on the main drag, the Gran Via.

A more budget choice would be the Reina Cristina, in the heart of downtown.

(I personally prefer the Alhambra hill for its ease and quiet, not a big fan of downtown Granada, but others feel differently and like the "buzz"
.
In Madrid, I like the following downtown hotels:
The deluxe "Small, Luxury Hotel" group member,
the Villa Real (but I never can snag a good rate here except July-Aug).

www.slh.com
Intur Palacio San Martin
www.intur.com
H10 Villa de la Reina (like everything BUT the Gran Via location)
www.h10.es
Green Lope de Vega
www.hotellopedevega.com
I haven't personally seen the new Catalonia Moratin, and normally I'd stay away from Calle Atocha, but it's up at the far north end near the Plaza Santa Ana, not down by the train station, so it should be fine.

(www.travel-in-madrid.com has a terrific 95 euro special offer there)
Hope this gives you some ideas. I''ve assumed you're looking for hotels walkable to the sights. There are nice places where we stay in the upmarket Salamanca residential/shopping district , but a 20 min. walk to the Prado.

I like the H10 Villa de la Reina too (and agree with the comment that everything about it is great except it's Gran Via location). There's a more detailed posting from me about this hotel - under the heading "Hotel Report - Barcelona, Madrid and London".

Granada: I'm one of those people who prefers to stay "down the hill" in Granada. Like to be able to walk the streets. In the downtown area their aren't any places that I would describe as historic or "charming" but there are some good hotels. From 2* to 4* [if memory serves: Inglaterra, Duaro, Duaro II, Carmen and Melia Granada. The Carmen and the Melia are large "Marriott" type places. The others are smaller. I've stayed in several of them and I wouldn't worry about any of them.

Just stayed at Intur Palacio San Martin for four nights and really enjoyed it. It's a great location, next to a very quiet square and the Monasterio de las Descalzas Reales. In a quiet location but also walking distance to Gran Via, Plaza Sol, Plaza Mayor, Plaza Orient and Palcio Real. The Monasterio tour is given only in Spanish but still worth it.
