I have previously posted two hotels - but for ease of reference I will repost the names. I do hope someone will know these hotels and/or areas. I have never had so much trouble booking a trip! As I am travelling alone, I am looking for a great location within walking distance of sights, close to small cafes for evening strolls. Any help would be much appreciated!

I don't like that area of Paris at all . It is far removed from most tourist sites. The St Michel address is more in the thick of things.

Thank you for your reply..."in the thick of things" meaning...? This hotel is 2 stars which is the only thing that is a drawback (and that one can feel the rumbling under the hotel from the train - says the reviews).

Why are you having problems with hotels? Is it budget or are hotels booked for the time you want them? Or other problem?

I do understand your need/desire to be near cafes and other activities. It's more fun that way.

Thanks Adrienne, It is partially budget, but there seems to be a lot of choice. I have never spent an extended period of time (10 nights) in one hotel so I want to make sure I am comfortable with the facility and the location. I think I have too much choice and over-thinking the matter. If I am staying in one place for 10 days, I would like to be able to come in from a long day of sightseeing and relax comfortably. I don't expect palatial accomodations, just comfort.

I've stayed in two hotels in the area you want and thought they were both good for walking around after dinner and for the price. But there are tons of other recommendations here and many of them look nice.

As stated above, I would choose something more central; closer to the river.

For a stay of 10 days I would probably rent an apartment. This would give you more room (Paris hotel rooms are usually small) and a kitchen to keep snacks/drinks or even to cook a dinner or two, if you want to do that.

I understand the apartment rental - but I like the idea of front desk help if needed.

Look at the Hotel Jeanne D'Arc in the Marais. We rent an apt neaqry and lots of cafes etcand it's not far to walk to the Seine.Haven't stayed there but friends have and enjoyed it. we stay in an apt nearby

Venere has helped me more than once from making a hotel mistake in Europe.

I would suggest moving toward the river. I have clients who prefer hotels near the Place de Odeon, which you can check out on a hotel map, such as the one at venere.com or tripadvisor.com.

If you are staying 10 nights, you might want to drop a few emails directly to the hotels, looking for a bit of consideration. It can't hurt; it may not be price, but perhaps a larger room, included breakfast or some such thing.

I have heard good things about all three hotels mentioned above (Jeanne d'Arc; Balcons; and Grand Ecoles).

Are you working with a street map of Paris in front of you? That's the first thing I do when researching booking room in a city new-to-me. So you can get the idea of distances, and what's near what. I don't recognize any of those you mention, are they recommended on Fodor's? Trip Advisor? I stayed on St Mich (near Sorbonne) and liked that location very much.
