Help with European Recipe Measurements

I bought a wooden heart shaped cookie press in Switzerland this summer. The recipe that came with it calls for 1 EL. aniseed as one of the ingredients. Can anyone tell me what EL. is and its equivalent in teaspoons? Thanks.

EL probably stands for Esslöffel, which is soup or dessert spoon, usually the equivalent of 5 ml, about twice heaped teaspoons.

It's almost the same as a tablespoon (Tbs).

Jen has it correct. 1 EL is essentially a tablespoon. I measured it out with a syringe and 5 mls is about 1/2 a tablespoon.

A measuring teaspoon is 5 ml, a measuring tablespoon is 15 ml. The spoons in your silver drawer hold various amounts, use a measuring spoon

Thank you All!! I have been unable to find this thread again until now. I am so impressed with the helpful information.

I used the aniseed this weekend to make pannetone and it didn't seem very strong. Maybe add some anise flavoring, too.

Thanks again.
